Many Users still get the problem
The Reason is that bug is from kali itself

proposed Solutions : 1 - if you run it in Virtualbox You can Save your Machine instead of shutdown it
2 - upgrade to the new version they fix GNOME in the new update

Its still not working for me I read your comment but that was nearly a year ago now and I downloaded mine the day before yesterday so not an older version. I get to the terminal part but and eenter my passwrd enter the command enter my password again and get the black screen again

i have a different issue but a least i can login everytime with ctrl alt f1. the last time i was logged in i typed these:
sudo usermod -l new_username old_username
sudo mv /home/old_username /home/new_username

just says xinit: server error
