For the RAM is actually a valid reason to have it soldered, because getting it close to the chip means you can run it faster, but storage there is litterally no other reason than that Apple wants to take you for a ride, and honestly they could keep their stupid pricing if they used commidity SSDs or just had a slot for a comodity SSD.

Yeh like 1TB is the minium I would want which increase the price the the Mac Mini to a stupid price considering you can get a 2TB SSD for like $120 and Apple wants $200 for a 1TB SSD and $600 for a 2TB one after you add a reaosnable amount of memory aka 16GB it's too expensive.

Glad you got the upgrade working... but just a small request... could you please not use God's name in vain followed by "d.I." You're literally cursing yourself as well as whoever or whatever you're working on. Words have power. Use them wisely.

Where di you purchase the chips you replaced? Are they easy to access?

Way too delicate and risky IMO. A good way to brick your Mac. Would only consider it if SSD already failed.

Rather than forcing Apple to use USB-C, the EU should have forced them to make storage upgradable.

1 or 2TB should be the base anyway...

that serialisation is one of the reasons why I absolutely hate apple

Thats good and all. I imagine they will upgrade their hardware to need a special apple software to pair their hardware to upgrades/replacement parts in order to unbrick it.

YESSS TRY ON M2 AND DO RAM UPGRADE. took a 2008 iMac, added Linux,250g ssd, and a extra 4g of ram. It was perfect for being just the family computer in 2023

This upgrade is not worth it. 400 dollars for the chips and then an amount for the labour. Just get like a Beelink SER for less?

Nice. Apple should be sued by the EPA for the waste they cause in preventing upgrades. The Last Mac Mini I had was a Core 2 that was smaller, had an optical drive, had a 2.5" HDD, had upgradable RAM and even had an Nvidea GPU.

Guys, did you SEE the MacMini Thunderbolt connectors on the back ? You have so many 40GBps ports for NVME SSDs! You can attach 100 TB, not only 2 😀

You did NOT upgrade the HD for a 100$. Factor the hot air machine et the other tools and 800$ isn't so bad. Or just go with a TB external HD and call it a day.

why Apple didn't put nvme ssd interface into desktop (mac mini, mac studio)? 2TB nvme ssd just about 100 - 150 USD, but it is much much expensive (around 800 usd) to upgrade in Apple's website.

I hope someone, like the European Union, can force Apple to provide easily upgradeable Macs instead of locking them down, but in case that doesn't happen there are folks like @dosdude1 giving people an alternative.

I picked a secondhand MacBook Pro 16” M1 Pro that was bought in the US but sold in the UK three months later. I had an issue with the alignment of the screen not putting the screen into standby when closed, so took it into a local Apple Store for help. Turns out it was originally sold in the US with EIGHT years of Apple Care. I never knew that this was an available option, but Apple carried out the repair and I wasn’t even charged any excess fee. If ever buying anything secondhand, I will certainly be checking the serial number first to see if it has any Apple Care left.
