The Wii U - What Happened? ft. Scott The Woz

I worked for Best Buy for about two months during the Black Friday through Christmas season of 2012, and the Wii U was hyped up to be a big seller. I don't really remember it being a huge hit, I mean yeah Black Friday was crazy, but it's nothing like what we all saw on the news when the PS2 was released in 2000. I worked in the music/mp3 section so I never had the pleasure of trying to get across what exactly the Wii U was. I did sell a lot of Beats headphones to suckers, though.

Yoshi's Crafted Wooly World hasn't been ported also! And Kirby

I remember buying one and literally not finding a single game I was super interested in playing for like a year before I sold it. No 3d mario, no Zelda, no Metroid. I ended up selling it to a friend.

It's actually crazy how many people genuinely don't even know the Wii U ever existed, or thought it was just some add-on for the Wii. A LOT of people think the Switch is the successor to the Wii

The sheer fact that the Wii was selling as much as the Wii U on its launch date proves that a more powerful Wii would have been a better option.

All Nintendo has to do was make a jacked up Wii with more horsepower - and have it come with the wave bird control and have options for the Wii remote. It would have been far more successful and have probably had a lot more 3rd party support

I still don’t know what the Wii U is

Nintendo should have come out with a console with graphics that can rival PS3 and XBox360. By then, all they have to do is incorporate an existing GPU from AMD or Nvidia without having to invest in any new development to rival the graphics in those console. It would have been very low development cost for Nintendo. They should also bundle the system's remote with the build-in motion plus along with a classic pro controller. They could also easily incorporate a large build-in storage hard drive for games. This will immediately attract more hardcore gamer and developers. Finally, they should simply call this new system "Wow Wii". They could have made a killing on the market capturing both the casual and hardcore gamers alike with very little development on their part and sell the unit at a low price that can easily undercut both Playstation and XBox. What a missed opportunity!

I understand why people don't like the WiiU but I rather enjoyed it. I could be playing a game and the girlfriend could use the TV. Lose a remote, use the game pad. It was hard to lose. 😅. The games were not that bad and the retro games for it were amazing on the game pad. Better than the 3ds version in many cases. Overall, I look fondly back at that system. Let us not forget how it played GameCube and Wii games perfectly! I see where everyone was coming when they say they didn't like it but it wasn't too bad.

Ah, the WiiU, the biggest failed Nintendo home console with one of the best games libraries. Shame that they consist almost entirely of first party games.

I really like the wii U, it’s a shame that Nintendo couldn’t market it better.

Its says a lot that the best user of the game pad gimmick, Zombie U, is based around how cumbersome the game pad is to use.

So many people I know who are not gamers bought the Wii and used it to play sports games, even today. They would have snapped up a Wii2, and if it had been powerful enough many others would have bought it. Given how virtual headsets cause tons of people motion sickness, going all in on sports games and combat games could have been very successful.

The Wii U was a poorly marketed system which didn’t know what it wanted to be and it’s a testament to most of its great games are on the Switch.

It could have just worked if it was just an additional gamepad accessory for the Wii.

Weirdly I still own my Wii U (I can’t find someone to sell it too) but I would’ve been fine if they just redid the Wii and made the Wii U thing an extra add on should it have been upgraded with better graphics or controls

Say what you will, the Wii U virtual console is really solid. It offers a bevy of classic titles from all of Nintendo’s consoles… well… it did anyway.

I've always said that there are two marketers in the world: one came up with the name of the Wii, the other that of the Wii U.

To summarize, they alienated developers, fans and general consumers with a confusing and gimmicky console.

I liked our Wii U. I liked the game pad.

Funny story, my younger son smacked the game pad and busted the screen. But because Nintendo had 2 different versions of the screen / touch pad which you had to open the game pad to find out which one you had, I bought a repair kit that had the required screw driver, so I installed the incorrect one, and we had an upside down game pad touch screen.
I never fixed it again and my kids got REALLY Good a reverse hand eye coordination. lol.

i'm still irritated that the last mainline starfox game got sacrificed to the WiiU's stupid gimmick.

The PS4 and Xbox One happened. The Wii U was a half assed attempt by Nintendo to create a AAA game console and not something for casual gamers.

Wii owners got sick of the gimmicks and wanted a full power AAA console. The Wii U continued the gimmicks while being underpowered compared to the PS4 and Xbox One.

Wii U is a fantastic console, and I will defend it until my last breath.

The wiiu was entirely worth it for Splatoon

I genuinely did not know it was a sequel console to the Wii until this video. I'm in no way kidding. I keep coming back to watch this one and it astounds me everytime lmao 🤣😂

I'll never get over that windwaker remake, arguably the best way to play windwaker due to QOL features, is stuck on the wii u and is unlikely to ever come to switch

What about Nintendo Land? That game was never ported to the Switch.

I bought the Nintendo 3DS because I saw the 3D effects as truly ground breaking but ignored the WeU because it it was not portable. I can forgive a system being UNDERPOWERED if at lest it was mobile but the WeU was the opposite.

Even if the Wii U flop financial and having low third party support, I will always have nostalgia for this unique and quirky console

I remember when the Wii U came out and me and my brother were extremely excited and we didn’t know at the time the Wii U was selling poorly and people were confused by its name, but I was too little to comprehend news and media at the time and not only that this was my second Nintendo console ever after the Wii, so on Christmas 2012 I got my Wii U and I was so hyped to play the new Nintendo system and through 2012 to 2015 I played the Wii U alot with games like: SSB4, Super Mario 3D World, MK8, Pikmin 3, Super Mario Maker, Splatoon, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, Nintendo Land, Wii Party U Just so many good first party titles for system. But in Late 2016 Nintendo announced their next console the Switch and I was excited for the next system but then I started to see articles on the Wii U and how system flopped hard in terms sales and marketing, and to be honest I was kinda heartbroken to find out that a system I enjoyed did extremely horribly for Nintendo all those years playing those games on this system just to find out that it was doing poorly the whole time.

Sorry if this comment was overly long I just wanted to share my history with the system because despite it flaws it was a truly awesome game system for me at least.

Personally after buying a black wiiu. I see the flaws but. As a creative person. I see the untapped potetial an unused ideas the wiiu could have been used for.
Like with zelda 1. The mic coukd he used to ko the poes voices like it was intended on the famicom.
The camera has so much potential to make the tablet interactive.
Based on fnaf the tablet works wonders for horror games.

I remember when I went to purchase a Wii U and the employee asked me if I already had a Wii. I said yes and he said then to just save my money from purchasing a Wii U because it is the same thing. He even told me the old games even work with the Wii U and on the original Wii you can still play GameCube games.

And to add to the community hub server to communicate with the world; I feel bad for those who never got the chance to get onto PlayStation Home years ago. Over time the quality of Home did dimmish, but what they did do is have seasonal events like Easter egg hunts and did give out a lot of free items as rewards. Too bad Sony shut it down.

If they just called it Wii2 or Wii HD it would have sold triple. Glad it didn`t though, Switch is great.

At least the Wii U gave us Splatoon!
