The 2022 Ford Maverick ($39,230 CAD as specced, ~$32,920 USD), and the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz ($45,129 CAD as specced, ~$40,945 USD) are the newest unibody trucks / open bed SUV’s to hit the market. By combining SUV comfort and ride with the versatility of an open truck bed, these two new vehicles attempt to offer the best of both worlds. Will they live up to the task? And how do they each work towards this goal while maintaining affordability? Thomas and James take a deeper look at how the Ford Maverick and the Hyundai Santa Cruz compare. Which will they prefer? SUBSCRIBE!

A huge thank you to Weston Ford for lending us their Ford Maverick Lariat. Check out their website here! https://westonford.ca/

I have a 2024 sante cruz. Base sel. None turbo, no bed cover, getting bed extender. Who cares about the slidding window or the radio. Looking for reliability. Turbo engines and dual clutch tansmission are not reliable from hyundai. Do your oil changes. don't ever go the distance they tell you or use synthetic. Use conventional oil. Do it at every 3,000 miles. I have a friend with 200,000 miles on a normal 2.5L 8 speed trans none dual clutch. Anything ev is not a good choice yet at all I work on them don't waste your money. Wait about 10 to 15 years nothing ev is safe or eco friendly. To make an ev car you are hurting the planet. Don't let people lie to you.

I guess its why my 401k has over 800k and theirs has ZIP!! They squandered their future pot of gold just to look like everybody else..lol

I'll never buy a Hyundai/KIA again.... Had a drivetrain issue 74km before the 100k warranty ran out. Called the nearest dealer and made an appointment. Well, driving to the nearest dealer had us up to 100,014km on the odometer. They said it's no longer covered under warranty.

Fuck them. We also went through 17 head light bulbs in 5 years, but it was a "wear and tear" item so they wouldn't even diagnose it. Brake jobs twice before 100k, starter died at 86k....not under warranty because they didn't have the kia part in stock, so they used the identical part from the Hyundai Tuscon but we had to buy the part since it wasn't a kia part.... BS right?

Sounds like 10,000 $ price difference and gas mileage makes the ford the best pick by far if there that similar besides if you live in snow country the ford has all wheel drive

I have a Ram 1500. Thinking of getting a Maverick. I think it’ll pair nicely. One for true hauling, the other for city. Also, the Maverick and Santa Cruz aren’t trucks, but they are pick-ups…pick-up SUV.

The whole screen interior of the Hyundai is what makes me like it. Digital is the future. I haven’t had a vehicle with real buttons since 2018.

new(as of two days ago) mav owner here: the cubby behind the console is for snacks, so when you hit a bump they fly directly into the center rear passenger's mouth, and the hole is for a lego guy or wargaming miniature or like an r2-d2 or whatever.

if I had kids I would get the Maverick and lower it to retain a more car like experience. The Santa Cruz is still way too big for my tastes.

An electric power-train? Why would I daily drive anything else?.... Because like most of the people in America and Canada, I don't have a house where I can install a charging station for a full-on Electronic Vehicle. And don't get me started on outdoor charging stations. Those are so few and far between that they don't play a factor.

I live in NYC. Population of 8.5 million people. Number of outdoor charging stations? = 7,500 approximately.... For the entire state of New York and New Jersey! What's a word for worse than pathetic? Any car-maker who wants to be successful in the near future needs to concentrate on Hybrid technology. (Not that plug-in stuff either.) Hybrid technology to put in cars that the masses who live in apartment units can actually use on a daily basis.

I just bought 2024 XRT Santa Cruz. I average 29mpg in town add highway use. I don’t drive aggressively. I also own a 2022 Ram 2500 4x4 6.4 Liter Hemi w/4 Doors. I use the truck for the big stuff and my Hyundai for the little stuff. At the end of the day I prefer my Hyundai. First time ever buying a vehicle like the Hyundai. I’ve been a big truck guy for over 30 years

The Maverick Lariat luxury package is definitely worth the few grand. The truck basically drives itself, modern safety technology (which is sad to think of as a luxury), rugged bed liner you can beat up, great B&O sound system.

It just modernizes the truck to be on par with what people expect from today's driving experience.

The moonroof, tow package and FX4 also give it a robust versatility for most any situation.

I really do love the look of the Santa Cruz. To me it would make a great daily driver and while small, having a truck bed is useful.

Ford wins mainly due to not being targeted by stupid teen car thieves, Hyundai may have put immobilizers in the US market ones now, but the stupid criminals still break in to try anyway

Yes I know Canadian market (and worldwide) Hyundais all have immobilizers now, but the ‘Kia boys’ don’t care, they’ll wreck it anyway.

Ford also loses due to the shitbox 🤮🤬😡CVT

the only thing that really irritates me with the Ford, and yes this is petty, is the name. The original Maverick was a car, not a truck. And if they were goin to resurrect a name, why not bring back the Ranger? That used to be Ford's mini truck, and that's basically what the new Maverick is. ok, I'm getting off my soapbox now...

I have a 2015ford.fusion and i can say the ecojunk motor are worthless.with that in mind i did alot of research and settled on the 2023 SC SEL PREMIUM. with a 15 year150k warrenty it was a no brainer. It has a ton of power great gas milage.and a.blast to drive. The looks set it apart and it been a great truck i will never buy a ford.again after the bad service and crappy engineering ford has done.
