The problem is fixed. It was the USB cable. I used a new, "fast charging cable". When I switched to my old cable "wallah"

Other videos just offer generic "try unplugging and plugging in again" nonsense. This resolved the problem for me. My phone and cable previously worked fine. My cable worked fine with other phones. Other cables worked fine with other phones, but not mine. Very happy, thank you!

Apparently there is some wrinkle to it. My phone (android 6.0.1) have developer options enabled. There I have usb configuration set as mtp. IT DOES NOT HELP - THIS SETTING IS IGNORED BY PHONE WHEN IT IS PLUGGED IN.

Sep 2021 : I changed my cable to an original one. and it worked. I saw this hack in a comment down by Vikas. So Thankful. Hi Thanks for your video , I didnt have the select usb configuration in my phone and i was going crazy with frustration i read in one of the comments change cable . simple it worked. PHew....
