Whatever you may think when it comes to Southgate, Spain were about as clear a favorite as you can get going into the game. And they lived up to it. Very deserved win. England with another coach would not have done any better and were very lucky to set foot in the final. It is what it is. Just not good enough.

The way we play the game makes our players look bad. Spain had a high press plan to give us no space and have us in our own half back to goal, giving our best players on the ball i.e Foden, Mainoo no room to play and turn. No one could find a pass in this game and it's partly due to the fact they gave us no room and no options. At that point you're desparate for a striker with legs to run behind on long balls or wingers to do the same to make them respect you and think twice before pressing the whole team high. Once you make them respesct that, they sit a bit deeper and then the space comes to play.

We know Kanes style, minimal pace but high quality passing and shooting if he has the chances. At that point you need pace on your wings to open up the game, Gordon and Saka. We didn't play Gordon so there's the left out of the window. Problem with Saka is he hates sprinting onto anything and off the ball his priority is a defensive position to help the team because that's our game plan so he's not really an outball option. He doesn't beat people to the byline consistently enough either, he tries to cut in and congests the middle too much with his head down and he's always walking on the ball, waiting for play to catch up. He has the ability to be a far greater threat but he's so inconsistent and not direct enough or willing to use the space out wide to leave room in the middle. If you're going to play Saka for this many minutes, you need to be willing to have your wing back overlap more often but again, we want Walker mostly to be in a positon to stop opposition counters so it doesn't happen more than once or twice a game. Everything we do is defense first and it's not a winning strategy when you have the players we do.

England could very easily play aggressive like Spain but we choose to play conservative football even when we have quality players. We respect the other teams strengths before we make them respect ours. Fortune favours the bold and Spain deserved it. I'd rather go out in a QF or SF playing positive football and trying to use our players strengths than reach a final and lose. By all rights we should have been out in the last 16 this tournament and it wouldn't even be a debate, it'd be Iceland 2.0 but worse because our squad is far superior at this time.

England were lucky to get to the final as they didn't play great to get to it . They struggled early on, won against Holland too but in the final they played against the best team in the world and tournament. But England could have won with the right players on the pitch and if they played much better. The blame sits with Gareth Southgate for putting on the wrong starting line up including Kane who didn't play well most of the tournament. When the Subs came on England started playing better and Palmer soon scored only for Spain to net a winner minutes later due to poor defence by England.
