Thin layer chromatography is based on adsorption chromatography. In this method, the adsorbent material is applied on the glass plate, plastic surface or an inert solid surface. Once the plate is ready the sample is applied at the end of the plate. The plate is then transferred in a developing chamber that contains mobile phase solvent. The solvent moves up the plate via capillary action. The sample molecules gets separated on the basis of their interaction with the mobile phase and stationary phase.

Nice explanation👍Btw there are 2 more methods to detect colourless analytes:
1. By placing the chromaplate in glass chamber containing few crystals of Iodine (they adsorb iodine vapours and look as brown spots)
2. Spraying Ninhydrin reagents on chromaplate (for detection of amino acids)
