Joey, my pump has to be submerged. I'm going to put it in the bucket to pump into the 55 gal. tank. I really don't want to put it in the tank. Do you see any problems with doing it that way? Also I was going to use k1 in the bucket along with sponges and polyfill or should I add another bucket just fort the k1 media?

Could you run 2 buckets connected to 1 pump? Like one for mechanical and and one for biological? Or hell even 3?

Got it, The pump in will use the canister as pre-stage of the aquarium filter, well thought. Even the ADA or FZone stainless steel are as you say and I think somehow your observation makes a lot of sense.

That's too much of the lava rock and not enough filter media. Are you able to do a back wash with a garden hose. Otherwise how do you clean the rock.

Well I got everything together and gonna try this project tomorrow. I am hoping to have it in use for a long time so I made a few adjustments. I also realize in the video he recommends some of the changes I will make. Like flexible tube and barbed fittings. I also bought a slightly bigger pump but it was very close to same price as one he recommends. Both on Amazon. I am not very good with video making anymore but I might try to video document my build and definitely thank Joey, King of DIY for helping me with this build. This will be my second time building a filter but first time having guidance. My first filter was terrible but I still used it for years not knowing it was just wasting electricity and not doing much. I hope for a lot better out come with this. I also bought some fancy physical material. I hope that doesn't effect the flow too much. Anyways I really appreciate your knowledge and sharing, thanks again King Joey.

I been building my filters for a few years now just like this- they work great except now recently seems i always have problems with the Bucket Screw Caps leaking around the rim when the pump stops for any reason, even made a metal tool to tighten them Good -- seems the manufacturer is getting sloppy on their manufacturing of them, just ordered 2 new Lids a while back and built 2 new filters and both would not Seal, and they can be a pain in the Arse to unscrew if put on with the help of a Tool. .... getting Frustrated.

So you have to have the tank above the bucket filter for it to work

Really this homemade canister filter is a great filter that offers the same as the EHEIM 2262 or the Fluval FX6 with the difference that the total cost of this homemade canister is $ 135US including the external pump compared to $ 449US for the EHEIM or $ 340US from the Fluval.
It is very important to take into account something that was missing to mention in the video about the construction of the homemade canister. Great care must be taken to seal with silicone and clamps all parts of the filter. It is also important to seal the edge of the Gamma seal. Another great external pump for this homemade canister is the Orlushy DC 5000 which can be purchased on Amazon for $ 79 US. Which must also be sealed at the joints with silicone and clamps to prevent leaks. The MOST IMPORTANT PART is two 12V Plastic Solenoid Valves at the entrance and exit from the canister filter in order to prevent flooding your home in a blackout.

I wanted to make this and add bucket lids as a separation for the different filter media's but they were previously used to store garlic in 10 litre buckets, so now they have a strong garlicky smell and I was wondering if it would be safe for my fish.

Just made this myself, putting it to a 75 gallon. Everything works pretty well as described. Only thing I noticed was if the pump shuts off and you dont close the valve, water spews back out the lid of the bucket. Works great, but there is no fail safe if say, the power was to go off. Then you have a massive water mess everywhere. As the ball valve needs to be shut when pump is turned off

DIDN'T WORK. leaked everywhere. Uniseals didn't seal well and the gamma seal can't handle any head pressure it leaked on BOTH seals.

is it ok if you place the motor inside the "canister" instead? so it would use less tubing and would also look less messy?
