I read that you should sand the vases that are class and ceramic as well as apply primer before painting them otherwise they could end up flaking or chipping off. Did you find that they ended up chipping or flaking off easily?

I enjoyed the experiment. I have been trying different textures. I tired Baking power... yes it dries quick but add some fun fluffy texture.

Is there a way to seal this while keeping the matte finish? Hoping to use it for an indoor hanging planter

I have been spraying old dishes with high gloss spray paint in red and blue. I cannot believe how good it looks. Of course, I can only use it for decorative purposes now.

Some of the original colors appealed to me then making all of them with matte paint finishes. I like variations and gloss on some of the items. I know this was about painting them, but trends aren’t everything.:D

If I can offer any advice (as a life-long artist/crafter) RELAX. I just watched some other chicks video on this and you both seem overly trepidacious. It's impossible to fubar this project. Bcuz it's acrylic paint - submerge in water and everything will slip off - start again. And BE RESOURCEFUL. Sand, dirt, flour, cornmeal, oatmeal, plaster of Paris, thinset......practically anything can be added to paint (for texture).

Someone mentioned priming first - that's a good idea. Can get automotive spray paint primer at any hardware store, and grab a couple cans of clear MATT spray to make your item a little more durable. Can also leave the items outside on a hot sunny day (in direct sun) and it helps to sorta 'bake' the finish on. Have fun - Get crazy.

I finally tried this with my toddlers thinking it would be very difficult to screw up. We used dollar store paint on a glass vase. The paint just wouldn’t stick. Maybe we’ll try to thicken it more next time or will use a higher quality paint. Any recommendations?

Add more water to the bak soda paint. That's what happens to my store bought chalk paint after I've mixed a new color and it is sitting for a while. You just add water.

These are exquisite, thank you for sharing. I also like the baking powder texture and think a little water to thin it out would've worked just fine, especially on the very dimpled pink one. Baking powder cause bread to rise therefore it should probably be a bit thinner before application allowing it to process as it dried while on the item.

Instead of paints. Try mica powder. Comes in lots of colors. Even metallics. 😀With a lil water or oil.

Great experiments! MaCenna, Waverly chalkpaint with baking soda works perfect! I do it all the time on projects like this. Chalk paint is already thick and more heavy bodied and it covers well but with the baking soda it works fab!

the difference between baking soda and baking powder is - when cooking with baking SODA you need an ACID in the recipe - lemon juice for example, to ACTIVATE the reaction which causes your mixture to rise. Baking POWDER already had an ACID incorporated into the mixture which ACTIVATES WHEN COMBINED WITH LIQUID - which is why your BAKING POWDER mix started to rise and harden (Im not a smarty pants, its just I wanted to make a mug cake earlier in the week but only had soda and the recipe said powder - so I googled it to see if they are transferable - they aren't, SODA needs an acid in the recipe, end of)
