Nice information, would i be able to get a copy of the mass air flow sensor calculations formula? it would be nice to have and to use it at the dealer. ive had fuel trim codes lately and im always second guessing when im looking at my mass air flow readings.

I have a 3.5 liter engine so are you saying my MAF should read around 3.5 g/s at operating temperature at idle? Mine is reading only around .6. Is it bad? Can something else be causing this reading besides the maf?

I have a p0170 code. The car runs perfect no hesitation no variable idle. Stressing because I only have 3 weeks to get this to turn off CEL light and pass emissions .any help much appreciated

So far all the aftermarket stuff I’ve gotten from Delphi Technologies has been crap. Thanks for the video but step up the quality.

Would if you have a rough idle to stall issue and while the engine is running, you disconnect the MAF sensor and the vehicle will idle almost perfect, you can plug it back in and the engine will remain idling good and drive good but as soon as you turn the vehicle off or disconnect the battery then restart it the rough idle returns until you disconnect the MAF sensor again. The vehicle is a 5.3 silverado 08, this is all happening with a new MAF sensor since I just replaced it when the engine started acting up. I have been chasing this problem for quite some time and have replaced sparkplugs wires, coils, tps and I decided to check out the MAF sensor again when I discovered this anomaly. I don't know whether to get another MAF sensor or chase down wiring.

pete if you do read this I was told by a tech that the mass airflow sensor was only there to check if and how much is added when the egr is opened as the ecu knows exactly how much air goes in based on engine rpm air temp and cylinder volume is this true , my 1400 deisel ran without mass af sensor , as had a broken lead in maf plug , only set a code

HI Pete, have a question. 2001 f150 5.4, with my scanner had lean codes and noticed no voltage reading on the maf sensor. I have 12 v going to it and a good ground, but do not have and voltage at the signal wire. Hoping its not the ecm. Any ideas?

Great explanation of what is happening and what to look for. If you scanner cost less than $100, most likely your are seeing "Global PIDs" as required by law. Fun fact?
This was a value test we rigged with a voltage drop on the ground side at GM training centers in 2002, but even more relevant today as fuel prices increase. And never forget engine wear, compression, intake leaks, timing chain stretch and incorrect tire size will change load values! Great video...

If the Cat is partially blocked , will it affect the reading ? That would restrict the air flow . Or you can get the E Scan Elite from ATS ( Bernie Thompson ) which has a VE calculator built in !

1g/s for 1 littre is not always true specialy with BMW engine and I don't know why .. in normal operation the 1.6 engine have 2 g/s in idle.. maybe the valvetronic system is affecting something

Hey, Pete. Since the MAF sensor is the primary source for calculating absolute and calculated load, can you just look at the calculated load value pid and make a decision based on it? Over 85 % is what I heard is okay for non- turbo or supercharged engines.

Thanks Pete! You said that the MAF should read about 1g/s per liter of displacement ( I am guessing per 1k RPM) is that correct? So on a 02 Corolla with a 1.8L motor at 700rpm I get 1.81g/s, does that seem about right? I have. P0171 with long term fuel trim at 25% (constant) and short term fluctuating between -10 to 12% when driving. Since trim doesn't get better with higher RPM I have moved on past a vacuum leak and suspect fuel side. Since it has also developed a harder time starting after sitting when hot (1/2hour sitting after running into a store). Any thoughts?

I've read an article from your collegue Scott Shotton how to modify the VE calculator and get accurate number on turbo engine. If one works on a turbo engine you just need to gather what the pressure in the intake is while doing the VE test run. You can either use factory MAP sensor if equipped or install pressure transducer. Collect the map sensor data in "psi" reading. Then multiply the reading by 2 in order to convert in "inHg". Then add the calculated number to the current barometric pressure(inHg), at the altitude the test drive was performed. Then input this final calculated number in the VE calculator "barometric pressure" input. Man i love MotorAge 👍🎸🔧🥃
