Cars are subject to domicle laws. Unless there is probable cause to search or evidemt extigent circumstances, a search warrant is required. And even if you had those, a search warrant would likely be applied for just a precautionary measure simply because with a case this serious, there is no room for error.

A warrant is not necessary if police think a life is in danger. They do it on traffic stops. No warrant. Sadly, many Harris county detectives, aling with other counties are overloaded with crimes, & will quickly develop a theory & will find evidence to support their theory, which is leading to things like this happening, & innocent ppl being convicted.. Because I can almost guarantee they assumed James was the killer so didnt attempt to search for him. If he werent in his trunk & was alive he'd probably have been charged with the murder.

They have exigent circumstances to enter the house without a warrant because they can see the body from outside and have to check for life. The vehicle needs a search warrant to be searched because the person inside the house is already dead and there are no more exigent circumstances so if they recovered evidence from the car, it would be unusable in court. I think there could have been an argument to check the trunk for living, breathing people though. The reason they can take the car but not search is because it is their responsibility to preserve potential evidence. So they took the car but waited until they had a search warrant to search it
