Think about it, the sewers are filthy, upstairs where the secret is, it explains he abandoned his family who suffered from bipolar. Abandoning his family while they suffer with bipolar is a very dirty/filthy thing to do, and this is exactly what the sewers are, they are a filthy place that is inhabited by Dread Duckies.
