One can't even imagine what a journey to and through Scotland looked like in the 19th century. Today Edinburgh is a 2-hour-flight away from Western Germany, and then you can go by a comfortable car. Back then it was sailing and going by coaches, always in danger of very harmful accidents. Mendelssohn even went to Staffa which is still not without dangers today, at least to get off the boat. There is a quite worth reading book by German author Theodor Fontane who went to Scotland 30 years after Mendelssohn, "Beyond the Tweed", where the circumstances of travelling back then are documented quite unflattering. Anyway, there was no B&B-comfort, and people going there must have been people searching for even more wilderness experience than nowadays. And then think what music Mendelssohn created out of this experience. Absolutely amazing. When I went to Staffa with my wife we where humming the "Hebrides" on and on, partly to ignore the seasickness, but mainly to set the frame for this unique experience. You can leave Scotland, but Scotland never leaves you since you were there.

Mas que bela interpretação! O segundo movimento me conquista😁 e essa coda maravilhosa , grandiosa❤!!
Somente achei o primeiro movimento muito lento, na minha opinião deveria ser um pouco mais leve e solto…

Love this performance, but the camera work was off. For example, flutes would have a solo, and the camera was on violins or clarinets, etc.

i know it was a hard time for the industry and it propably must have been weird for the musicians to play in front of an empty hall, but this gives me the feeling they are playing just for me, which feels kinda nice :)

Danke liebes hr-Team. Nicht nur sind die Sinfonien von Mendelssohn ein paar meiner Lieblingskompositionen, aber auch die Bild- und Tonqualität sind hervorragend. Ganz zu schweigen von der tollen Leistung der Musiker und des Maestros!

I have to add, this is a great version of this. I love that they held back the tempo on the last mvt/the long Coda. That mvt only works if it is played in the most grand manner possible. Many orchestras rush thru it, but these people did it right. Bravo!

One of the great symphonies of all time---right up there with #40,The Jupiter, Beethoven's 5th, Schuberts Unfinished,Dvoraks New world symphony---just marvelous. Felix Mendelssohns early death, like Mozarts, Schuberts,Chopins & Gershwins was a tragedy of the highest order. He had more to go, and I am sure had he lived a little longer he would have put out a few more great symphonies and concertos.Sigh.

The greatest of Mendelssohn's symphonies. And to my knowledge, the first ever with instructions from the composer for the movementsw to follow one another without applause.

One of the top 10 symphonies of all time in my book. All of Mendelsohn's symphonies are criminally underrated, just as the composer himself is.
