Have you tried dissolving shellac in denture alcohol for flux? you can get de waxed shellac clear and dissolve it, I used for furniture when french polish and build up coats.
As its like varnish when it dries I wounder if it would work as a flux, because pine use pine resin for flux, shellac is from what the beetle excretes and its like a pine resin,
You should not be breathing in flux, when most chemicals get turned into a vapor when heated there molecules become smaller than micro and enter into parts of the lungs you don`t want them,eventually they will cause cell damage and cancer will be the concern for you.

This was such a huge help for me. As a person who repairs things for friends and my own equipment when I'm home this is a great tip. The liquid flux also goes bad relatively quick but I imagine resin in pure form will last years and years until I need it. THANK YOU!!!

Fun fact: If you dissolve the rosin in warm methanol and then soak pine or spruce sticks in it in a sealed jar for a week you can make yourself some fatwood firestarter. Isn't as good as the natural thing but it does a pretty darn good job.

Great Explanation, I'm just collecting the Sap from pine tree in my garden and experiment if i can have real rosin flux dry and liquid one , any tips appreciated.

I mostly agree with you, and thank you for the DIY flux, I will makes some. BUT, how is solid flux left of the board a good thing, to me that is a pain in the butt to remove???????

I thought flux were supposed to vaporise so you get nice soldering, but no flux left behind. It may create shorts.

The reason folks use a fume extractor is not the rosin - it's the solder. To use one or not is a personal choice, but folks in the electronics craft tend to have higher blood lead assays than most, and that's not a good thing. Rosin flux has been around for years, and is still one of the best types for electronics work.

The clear stuff looks like rework flux. Seems like it would be handy enough for the kind of work you do.
Melting rosin goes more easily if it is finely powdered. An improvised mortar and pestle works well enough for this. Rosin attracts water, so keep rosin powder in a dark container when not in use.
For those of us not using e-cigarettes, save the empty bottles from Shave Secret shaving oil or from any of several eye drops.

I know this is an old video but I just found it. I used your formula for flux and it's working great. I'm guessing my cost for a 20ml bottle is about 15 cents, maybe less. My last 15ml bottle was $10. Not bad!!

why not use a HUGE tub of plumbers flux ? my oatys tub cost me 6.99 cents at menards and its lasted maybe 10 plus years ... its still almost half full . i mean if you are removing it . thats what i have been doing since the mid ninetys and i have had no issues

so i dont need to clean the pine rosin from the board ?? i can leave it there ? i bought from portugal 700 grams for 15 euro incl shipping.

They use that rosin in church....that's the smell is so good to throw away bad spirit...
