Time for another history hike of the last three castles we visited. We start off in the historic town of Dambach-la-Ville with these beautifully colourful timber-framed houses which characterise the region so much. Next we start our climb into the foggy hills and pass by the church of the lost town of Oberkirch. Inside we make a sinister discovery: human bones. It is a 16th century ossuary and proves very eerie. Afterwards we finally reach our first castle: Bernstein, which was the seat of a vast episcopal bailiwick in the 14th century. Up next comes the castle of Ramstein. Up to a couple of weeks before visiting it was off limits, but the beautiful restoration work allows us to visit the ruins now. Such a great castle ruin to visit! Just a little further is the castle of Ortenbourg, a huge Gothic castle ruin. We enjoyed our lunch here and admired the beautiful windows and decorations in this amazing space. On our way back to Dambach-la-Ville we passed by a rock formation with a long Celtic history. The ancient Celts used this site to launch flaming discs into the air to ward off evil spirits, which must have been a true spectacle! Thanks so much for joining us on this hike and we’ll see you soon!
