Afaik, there was a case where an aeroflot pilot crashed trying to landing with his eyes blindfolded, or when the pilot let his kids fly the plane, or when a demo flight of the Sukhoi Superjet 100 crashed due to the pilot's disregard for terrain awareness. Did they ever learn?

BUT WHY ! treat such a high value ,hi-tech PASSENGER AIRLINER, like a new Jet Fighter?? From what little I know of both, as I understand it the Tupolev was quite loud internally which made for uncomfortable flights. But when I look at the two I have to marvel a little more at the Tupolev just for the fact of greater difficulties faced by the USSR in building such things due to a lack of international market access, yet still they managed it and a lot more besides. Both incredible planes, before their time.

I am amazed at how little tolerance there is in civil aviation, and yes it for the right reasons but having grown up on a V Bomber base (Vulcans and Victors) crashes were not uncommon, not every year but they happened. My father was head of safety equipment department for the Vulcans, he once told me when an aircraft crashed they used to send trainee pilots out to pick up the pieces as nothing focuses the mind more than the accidents of other pilots.

There's actually been a lot of speculation about another German plane in the air at the time photographing the TU-144. The two almost collided and that's the true cause of the crash. Do I know for certain? No, that's why it remains speculation.

I wouldn't call it "deadly competition", just typical russian disdain for safety, proper testing and manufacturing procedures. Not the first, not the last time they fucked up on the big scale.

Concorde’s flight might have been “mediocre” but those pilots lived to see another day. It’s mind numbing how many pilots throughout the history of aviation have pushed large aircraft beyond their performance parameters and crashed as a result. “Just wait until you see us fly. Then you’ll see something”. That’s a hold my beer moment and those never end well.

This is one thing the Russians copied 'in appearance but they got the design fatally wrong as we all know know. It didnt have the quality of Western engineering. I have flown on Concorde on the flight deck at the speed of sound - and she was a beauty. The TU144 was sadly a write off.

Remember as a kid in the 1970s seeing "Concordski", as everybody called it, breaking up. Twenty years ago, I lived in west London and you would get the boom as Concorde flew overhead in its final years. Very sad that supersonic flight - like manned space flight - was put on hold for so many years. Amazing tech of the post-war era.

Arrogant Tupolev was doing flight testing in front of the crow and not a demonstration with all of these last minute changes. I can guess that the development and manufacturing was an equally confused mess.

I believe that the British did allow access flawed structural plans to the Russians spies.Tupolev never check the stresses because that would take months.

They got what they deserved..
