Change Screen Resolution in Kali Linux on Raspberry Pi 3

I’m so confused and frustrated beyond belief. I could use some help. I have a small waveshare 5” lcd that’s 800x480 and I follow the instructions precisely, but I still get nothing on the screen, a bunch of little lines moving around and a black border on the left side. Any ideas anyone?

Im still having issues. i have a 1920x1080 monitor, i copied the config.txt to mine, however when i boot i get black bars top and bottom and the content area is so poor resolution its unreadable. the screen is bigger so maybe thats a step in the right direction. any tips?
