Tom Whiteman (of Legacy Collectibles) has just recently published "Third Reich Lugers: An Illustrated Collector's Guide to German Military Lugers from World War II". The full title pretty much says it all here; this is not a history of the Luger or its development - it's specifically a collector's guide. That means it includes the specific sort of data one needs to properly authentic or evaluate a Luger - proof marks, acceptance marks, serial numbers, and variations in finish and construction.

The book is just over 300 pages, divided into chapters for each major variant form 1934 until 1945. Note that it DOES include Kriegsmarine, Luftwaffe, police, and civilian-production pistols, but DOES NOT include foreign military contracts. Each chapter includes a table of data and a specific look at the army, navy, air force police, and commercial sub variants for that chapter. It does also include loading tools, imagines, and holsters. It also includes Whiteman's entire database of Krieghoof Luger data at the end, which will no doubt be a valuable resource for advanced collectors.

The cover price is $70, with a Kindle version available on Amazon for $30. I would consider this a must-have for anyone planning to buy a WWII German Luger; the price is essentially free when you consider the potential savings the first time is lets you recognize a good deal or avoid a bad one. It is a much more accessible book for this sort of thing than Sturgess & Görtz, and more comprehensive than Jan Stills (and not wildly out of print, like Stills' books).

Ian - I enjoy watching your videos. A lot. Technology tidbit - when you watch the section of this video showing the pages of the book, you'll notice they are not quite white. But rather a very light gray. Auto exposure/light meters are calibrated to think the world reflect 18% of the light that hits it. So, the resulting exposure makes things "18% gray" rather than white. You'll often see this on Facebook or similar when people photograph a piece of paper. It's not quite white. Not quite right. More light doesn't fix it, but adjusting the exposure roughly +1 will make a noticeable improvement. (Get a "gray card" if you really want it best.) This video could have benefitted from more light too. But I'm being persnickety. I love the stuff you do!

Why is it that no one produces the Luger anymore? Is it because of the stigma of being associated with the Nazis? If they made them I would buy one.

In my case it's probably 'this is why you shouldn't have sold the Luger to pay the mortgage.'

I haven't seen a Gun Jesus book review for a while. I like them, but not having them is better for my bank balance. Also, the Wehrmacht was not the army; it included the army.

The Kindle version could be useful as a lightweight reference at a gun show, but the format of that book looks as though it would be an absolutely miserable read on any e-book screen.

Hey Ian got one particular question for you.
Have you ever done a Video series on the Thompson Center Contender G2???
Just recently saw but looks pretty but it was just talked about and his big brother being able to help his little brother out?!?!?! Not sure if that means that the rifle can be interchangeable with use for pistol???? But if you haven't, could you pretty please do a review for this very cool looking pistol. But thanks again for your channel very informative on firearms!!!

My opinion, excellent book. Great insight into Lugers after hitler came to power. Photography is also some of the best this old man has seen. Bought it, read it, learned a bit more about my G series. Very happy.

The QR video links would have been a great addition to Pistols of the Warlords, but only if they linked to obscure Chinese language videos that had nothing to do with anything. 😆

There are at least two additional reviews of this book that viewers/followers of this channel might want to read; one published in an online forum “WW2 Axis Handguns and Accessories,” and the other in the book review section at Amazon.

It seems that some fake WWII Lugers have made their way into this book. According to the seminal book by Gibson, the 13000 serial range 1944 and 1945 Krieghoffs stand out from earlier 1944 (below 12000 sn) production and from post War assembly. (See Gibson, page 43). It is also kind of suspicions that: 1. No 1945 dated Krieghoff Lugers has ever been reported in Europe, 2. All reported ones are in very good condition, and 3. there are no mention of such guns in the specialized literature before 1960. Some experts believe that the “1945 Krieghoff Luger” was faked by the same gunsmith in the USA.

I should add here that beside the good organization of the information (in tables) and the chapter on HKs the information in the book is just a brief (and incomplete) summary of what is already out there in the classic books on the subject and online.

What is really needed is a book on how to identify faked WWII Lugers for the sake of the new (and some not so new) collectors.

I really found it funny when americans says "liberated" instead of conquered and pillaged. You americans really washed our history and replaced with your own version , because from our point of view, americans and soviets have destroyed most of our civilised Europe for their own gain .
