As you no doubt know, Paul Wallis and Mauro Biglino have a very different and perhaps extraterrestrial view of El/Yahweh and the Elohim.

People of today: the bible is so solemn and evocative.
Bible scribes: Ba'al, more like DumBa'al, amirite?

That was explained about as well as I have heard anyone. Its such a complex subject that you were able to navigate in a short clip. This was the first time I have watched any of your episodes. I will be sure to watch more.

This is one of my favorite topics. I’ve watched a few other videos, and read some blog posts from scholars I trust. I read Francesca Stavrakopoulou’s book “God: An Anatomy” but it didn’t really address the question of origins (it only did so as asides, to set up a story). Finally I found “The Early History of God” by Mark S. Smith and it went a long way toward filling in the gaps in my understanding of how some polytheistic splinter group of Canaanites ended up exalting a 2nd tier deity to be “G-D”. And still for centuries Israelites obviously had trouble breaking the habit of turning to Ba’al in a pinch because the prophets are always chastising them for it! Good stuff…I love all your videos and if I wasn’t disabled and living off SSDI and food stamps, I would totally be a patron. Awesome video, thank you!

Ironically - YHWH is also how our DNA shows up. The way of ancient knowledge- his name could have come from this. Who knows, just food for thought.

Very interesting: thats a kind of education on the topic you dont stumple upon in daily life. Most people - myself included - learned biblical "history" on one hand and scientific atheism and social critique of religion on the other hand, but never a scientific exploration of all these religious tropes and their true history.

As fascinating as it is to trace the evolution of various gods and their names (and I personally cannot get enough), consider: Tribal societies needed their god(s) on a day to day basis. Deities were a crucial part of their understanding of the world, and reflected their need for meaning/coherence within their ongoing life dramas. So whatever the currently favoured name of the leading god(s), humans projected onto them whatever qualities and behaviours they needed from their deities. So yes, there's a historical, traceable continuity to these leading gods of the Levant; but exactly who they were conceived to be at any given point in time is partly (largely?) a function of what was then going on in the lives of their worshippers, and of those peoples' need to make sense of it all.

Great analysis of such a deep topic in under an hour! It's amazing how the origins and fusion of the southern god Yahweh with the northern Canaanite god El also fits with what is hidden in plain sight in the Hebrew text.

Hi! Fantastic video, I really enjoyed the “metal” jokes. Lol. Anyways, I was wondering if you have listened to or heard of Mauro Biglino translations of the Hebrew Bible in direct reference to El, the Elohim, and YHWH. And what are your opinions, if you have any, on Mauro’s translations.

said region might be the inspiration of the setting of Noah's Ark. be aware that most if the stories in the Old Testament borrow from mythology of nearby cultures namely, the Sumerians as there's a similar story. it says that Enli, king of the Sumerian gods decides to kill mankind with a flood because they were too noisy.

Also, maybe if you ever come up on this message, something something you like dnd and I think that's cool.

[I cut out some weird shit here that would probably be best for asylum paperwork, but Hashem is a beautiful name.]

They call Marduk with name Ba´el, then there is this baal and then we have egyptian ba and el. I was thinking if this ba is similar to hebrew ben or arabian bar, meaning son of. Then Ba´el would be son of El. It is funny how we think they made those stories up.

Subscribed. Excellent impartial academic review of the topic.

Q. Do you consider 'Baal' to be a singular claimed deity, or a category of possible deities?

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Background:

My current understanding is that "Baal/baal" was a category and not a definite singular deity (the Baal vs. a baal). Corrections (preferably with references) are greatly appreciated. While 1 Kings does specify a singular deity, extra reading (to me!) leans towards "Baal" being a category; "'a baal" not the Baal.

Absolutely brilliant! Many many thanks for producing this episode, fills in some of the many gaps I have around this subject. I'm new to the channel, and I found your style of presentation and your pragmatism fits the subject very well - well done if I may say so!

I had never thought about the bronze age collapse in relationship to the Caananites and their independance, as of course they were so insignifacant in relation to the regional superpowers. A thought occurred to me - could it be that the 10 plagues of Egypt are related to events of the Bronze age collapse resulting in the freedom of the Caananites from the Egyptians. Real events that became myths that supported the birth of an independant people? Just an idea that popped into my head as you spoke, maybe a ridiculous one I don't know LOL.
