I was a backend engineer working in java and I was using a decade old laptop (not even PC) with 16GB RAM and somewhat decent SSD for over 2 yrs.

Most apps would take 10-15 seconds to load and I needed to manage the open software very carefully. However, I was still able to get work done.

Now I'm 100% against giving underpowered laptops to working professionals since it's extremely annoying and laptop just freezes a lot of time during meetings, especially if I was sharing my screen but people with relatively simpler tasks like just using chrome and office software definitely don't need high end systems.

Playing this video on an HP Z400 in 4k. I edit videos on it too and it's flawless. I play GTA V and stuff too. It's an old workstation but it's good haha.

I'm developing on a 2016 intel loaded MBP. Personal laptop is a 2015. PC is... Idk. 2014ish? 6th gen intel, older... (1080?ti) GPU, older corsair RAM, NVME is the winner. Good audio card. Crappy USB network adapter even. Gets it done.
I'm seeing 10th and 11th gen intel Dells going up for sale now

Still using my 4790k as my gaming rig, and upgraded the gfx from a 1070 to a 3070 cause it was cheap.

For my main PC, I use a Lenovo USFF M720q with a i5-8600T. 6 core behemoth is perfect for everything I do.

All I got from the video is how spoiled employees are at LTT. The problems they talked about were mostly Software Related & you'd think Employees at a Tech Company could solve those problems. I get why Tech Manufactures Solution to most problems is "Upgrade Your Hardware" but this should not be the case at a Tech Company. Sure certain departments like video editors need more demanding systems but most Employees could get by easy with older Hardware. The old saying "A penny saved is a penny earned" will always remain true.

I wonder how you ended up with those kinds of problems,
we're still running 4th, 5th and 6th gen Intels just fine, only "problem" is Windows getting bloated overtime, but that's all to complain about,
everything is snappy with at least 16GB ram and sata ssd, even Windows 11 can be tricked into being compatible (thanks Ventoy), heck even MacOS 11 Big Sur hackintosh, Proxmox, TrueNAS Scale, Xpenology are all doable on such systems with at least 4th gen Intel cpus

In my company, the admin workers never get new computers. my engineers will get new computers, they use it for cad and rendering, so they do need some oomph. when it be come a too slow, i have the engineer’s computer handed down to the admin workers. one of my admin is now using first generation i7

If you're only doing office stuffs, Windows 2000 was still waaay responsive than the current windows 11. Looking at cpubenchmark, I can't find any AMD K7 cpus and the lowest was Pentium 4 1300Mhz which has 77 points and the kinda current processor Ryzen 7 5700G has 24618 points, which is 320 times faster. Windows 2000 era cpus should be slower than P4 1300Mhz, but doing office jobs, like word, excel, you dont need any current ones.

As someone still running AMD am3+ I game perfectly fine on an fx 8370 black edtion 32gb of ram and an amd rx580 , runs good enough that makes it hard to validate upgrading to newer hardware, where as going from the fx6300 to the 8370 black edtion was only $60, I do hope @LinusTechTips do a revisit on these older fx series

I've always favored Dells for daily use and hopped up gamers. They have always been reliable. Also, there are adapters for any video output port to any monitor. I use those regularly. Remember, we did just fine with older systems in the past, but now everything has to be bigger and better. $k, 8k... blah blah blah 🙄 Human eye can't perceive anything near 4K or above anyhow.

I feel like most of the weird bugs people encountered were because they moved the drives from their current systems into the older ones. Windows doesn't exactly like having conflicting drivers installed. And I know that windows has the sysprep /generalize tool but in my experience from creating windows images, your image source machine should match the target hardware as close as possible. That's why in order to minimize the number of images they have to maintain, many companies only offer 3-4 system choices overall.

I feel like the Machines they got from this company they sourced it from where just Bad machines, because i myself have a OptiPlex 7040 with a 6600k and 16 gigs of ram with a intel ARC A380LP and i never had any issues with the system at all. All the random Glitches they said they experienced Never happened to me, my system was Extremely fast and snappy. so i really don't understand why their systems just seemed to give them non stop Technical issues. The fact you can get these system for like 200 dollars is actually Bonkers. Considering's the fact that the systems these OptiPlex's are competing with are probably over 2000 Each. Im gona be upgrading mine to a i7 6700 here shortly and adding another 16 gigs of ram for Quad channel.

My main PC runs with an z370, 16GB DDR4 Dual Channel and an i7 8700. I got them for free, because the Boss of a friend threw it in the trash, because he got a newer 12700K.

Was a nice upgrade, about same performance as a Ryzen 3600 with my RX 6600. A Samsung 970 Evo plus runs at full speed no problem.

I game on it mostly and use it for everyday work. Resolution is 2560x1080. I would like to upgrade, but at the Moment there really isn't a .. need. It would just give me more Numbers, but not a better experience. Hobby wants, budget and brain says "no lol".

So apparently booting taking several minutes on a old system even with a SSD is kinda normal.
I used to thought something was wrong with the 4th gen system that I still daily drive, since it took quite longer to boot compared to my laptop which is even older and on spinning rust(granted that is running Windows 7 which don't need much performance to be smooth), looks like newer versions of Windows just need a lot of performance to boot fast but not required to just be smooth in normal operations, interesting.
