Small correction! Discworld Emporium resellers books printed by a larger company. Should have known with how affordable they are. Still super great books but they aren’t the original creator. There is a publisher called Dunmanifestin certainly worth checking out!
ОтветитьPeople go out of their way to buy dust jackets? I throw mine away haha!
ОтветитьI hate when I am looking at a hardcover book online and the store doesn't have a picture of how it looks without the jacket.
ОтветитьNote that folio also makes nice editions for ~£30-40 which are obviously not as nice as asoiaf but are still nice deluxe editions to collect
ОтветитьYup, I don't have any ASOIAF on my book shelves because it's not going to be finished. And not because of a tragic death, the dude just doesn't feel like doing it.
ОтветитьWho is this Emily? I love her! Please let us know when her channel is up.
ОтветитьI'm coming across this a year later. I read my Sanderson fancy leatherbounds...I just never take them out of the house, and wash my hands before I touch them. XD
ОтветитьI honestly hate it when a fancy special-edition book just has a special dust jacket and the book itself looks normal. I don’t use dust jackets. I don’t like how they feel in the hand, I don’t like how they look, and I’ve been known to just throw them in a box and never touch them again because they are completely 100% worthless to me.
I really wish there were more affordable special editions with fancy binding and covers that weren’t crazy expensive. Even $50-$75, really affordable as stuff like that goes, is hard to justify for me when I can get the standard edition for $15-$20. The day I find a publisher making nice, high quality leather-bound (or even just leather-look) versions of my favorite books without dust jackets for under $50 I’ll jump on it and buy myself a huge collection, but I doubt that’s going to happen any time soon.
I'm at the point now where I almost only buy Folio Society, and I totally read them. Beautiful things should be enjoyed. It should be noted that FS have a lively second hand market on ebay, sometimes markups but sometimes good savings. It depends on what you're looking for.
ОтветитьI do not like dust jackets because the edges always look bad after some use.
ОтветитьI understand why Emily is over DUNE, since a whole bunch of goobers have come out of the woodwork to read it and act all smug and superior to the people who have only seen the movie.
(it's me, i am goobers)
What edition are those tolkien books? I really like the spine art.
ОтветитьI love folio society, I have to point out the pages and books are very strong, good thick pages and hand sewn.
ОтветитьI'm so glad I checked and managed to find a recent reprint of the illustrated (watercolours by Alan Lee) version of LOTR in one big tome. I grew up reading the illustrated versions and for so long there was only that one old printing of them (in 3 volumes).
ОтветитьMy complaint with that Dune edition is in the quality of the book itself.
The paper quality is really low, like for a paperback and the pages are glued, not sewn. It seems like it's not made to last, even though they market it as a "collectible".
I like heavily used coffee stained editions. they have character and are interesting. Very affordable aswell....
ОтветитьHave you picked up the Illustrated editions of the Witcher books, would be interested in your thoughts on them
ОтветитьCan I ask about your bookshelves and how you create/installed it?
ОтветитьDaniel throwing that leather copy of Mort around like it doesn't sell for $3-5k on ebay.
ОтветитьI'm just going to give Emily a pass under the assumption that she is a lot drunker than she appears
ОтветитьGet those raisins out of the moons hat
ОтветитьI dont care how good these editions look
These garbage companies charge waaay too much
New subscriber here, love this!!!!
ОтветитьEmbalming xD
ОтветитьDon't think biasness against a book series should go down with choosing which book editiion looks the best. I personally can't stand the fascinating with game of thrones. Didn't like it much at all really. But I still wouldn't hate on a book if I'm judging them "specifically" on special edition quality. I turned off the video the second I saw her comment on dune as I no longer needed to hear this person's opinion. I am not a dune fanboy. I read them 20 plus years ago and haven't touched them since. I also read game of thrones around the same time and never bothered to read the rest when they slowly emerged. But those special editions looked fantastic irregardless of my opinion on the series
ОтветитьIts funny hearing you say reading Folio books is nerve wracking, because as beautiful as they are they're absolutely designed to be read. Their binding is always sturdy, and the paper is acid free, so they're definitely built to last. My general rule with Folio Society is to only buy copies of my favorite books, or of editions done by my favorite artists.
ОтветитьExcept the Dune special edition has really thick glue in its binding which makes it a paperback in disguise. Special Editions need to be sewn.
ОтветитьI hate that I am starting to crush, HARD, on you
Ответить"Twilight exists". And that's about the most that can be said for it! It should not be suggested reading for anyone! Personally, I'm not a fan of those TP editions. I think they're too sober. I like the original paperbacks with their riotous art.
ОтветитьIt took me a while to figure out Juniper's game, which (IMO) is absolutely not worth the astronomical prices they charge. Also, not putting the book titles on the spines for a long series like Outlander is ridiculously stupid.
ОтветитьBut... but... the ribbon Daniel?! What about that annoy... I mean SUPER, OMEGA, AWESOME ribbon to mark your place while reading?!
I HATE those fucking ribbon things with a passion!
Deluxe edition is also about the quality of the book and paper
ОтветитьI have to defend the B&N editions a little bit. I can see if you don't personally like the style, that can happen with anything, but I really like how most of them look. I really love the look of a leather-bound book, and I like the cover art they add as well, for the most part. I love my copy of Dracula from them more and more every day, and their Divine Comedy was also beautiful, everything I wanted, even had Gustave Dore's illustrations.
But the price tag is the real kicker. I would love to collect beautiful true leather bounds from some of these companies, but I will never be able to afford that. I don't think there will ever be a time that I could bring myself to spend $100 or more on a single book. Honestly, these are already near the top of my range. I want it to be beautiful, but it also needs to be practical, and usable, I don't want a book I'm scared to read. I think the B&Ns hit that sweet spot really well.
Also, I hate dust jackets, they're in the way and get bent and damaged and they just bother me so much. I want the actual book itself to be pretty, so I can't really imagine spending those premium prices for a book that's relying on a dust jacket for much of its art. That's kind of a personal gripe though.
No Subterranean Press?
ОтветитьI’ve just gotten into collecting, I personally am only going after Easton Press for the classics like Treasure Island, Three Musketeers, etc because I feel like the overall design make it look like something of importance. As for special editions I definitely will jump on one for like a newish book especially if it’s illustrated and if it’s a completed series I will look for a set that is all from the same press or publisher. I personally won’t buy paper backs because I destroy the spine 😅 and I’m not above buying nice used complies especially Easton press because I don’t think a lot of people even open half of them.
ОтветитьMy like of the Dune special edition does not outweigh my dislike of the book, unfortunately.
ОтветитьI managed to pick up a folio copy of the count of Monte Cristo for £15 at a second hand book shop
ОтветитьInteresting watch, surprised not to see Easton on here. They are kind of notorious though.
Personally, part of the beauty of the high end books is their functionality in reading them. Ive never been a big fan of painted art pieces as they have no function necessarily, whereas Ive always loved architecture which has inherent function in it. The idea of buying these books that are quite expensive and then NOT reading them is to me to miss out on part of what makes the book valuable: its contents. Annoys my spouse to no end as he wants the books to remain absolutely pristine, but im not not going to read my limited edition Frankenstein!
I just ordered my first "special edition" book the other day. I've never splurged on a book. I honestly don't know what to expect, haha. It's The Folio Society edition of Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy. He's my favorite writer, so I figured why not.
ОтветитьThe Barnes and noble classics collection is great for the money! They do 50% of sales all the time, you can get them for 10-15 bucks ! They are no easton press but they are nice
ОтветитьPersonally, what I want is a focus in elegance, not so much color. And leather is always the best.
ОтветитьNot "deluxe" editions, but just nice and attractive and high quality: I really like books from the Everyman Library collection. Every book should come with a ribbon bookmark, by the way.
ОтветитьI used to be into special editions. But books that are too ornate and fancy stay on the shelf and never get used or read. And that’s not cool.
ОтветитьIt's not a "box". It's called a slipcase. >:(
ОтветитьIdk if it's just me but is that a lord of the rings tattoo you have lol
ОтветитьTwilight, really?
ОтветитьMe, who literally just buys the only available copy of the book I want without giving a singular crap about value and edition:
Ответить
