We got an absolute thriller ending, a heavyweight wrestling match in the middle of the game, and we saw a potential finals preview in Boston. Last night was spectacular and we gotta start in Portland. My Knicks are destined to play thriller games this season. With Jalen out, Mikal Bridges and Karl Towns took the scoring load against the Blazers in a roller coaster game with a bunch of ups and downs. Let’s go! Up by 6 with less than 80 seconds to go we just have to play smart. There’s no way Scoot planned on banking this one in. Anyway, the ball is safe in Mikal’s hands. Bridges puts New York up by 5, but Scoot Henderson played like a man possessed in the 4th quarter. Uuu that was a late whistle for the and-1. You see the bump prior, but there’s a slight if not any contact on the finish. However, Henderson uses the opportunity to cut the lead to 2. And with 2.5 seconds on the shot clock Mikal misses the tough fadeaway, giving Portland a chance to go for the win. Maaan, look at Scoot sliding his foot like he’s ice skating and then the refs award him the foul when Robinson was in an absolutely vertical and legal defensive position. But the Knicks don’t have a challenge so Henderson drains both shots to tie the game with his 18th point of the quarter. 2 easy whistles in the last 40 seconds resulting in 3 points for the home team, that’s a tough task to fight against. With no timeout, McBride fires up a prayer but comes up short and we go to overtime, where Scoot continues with his brilliance.
30 points off the bench on 62.5% from the field, an amazing game for the former 3rd pick of the draft. On the other end, the red hot Bridges responds with his patented mid-range jumper.
These were going to be the last points up until the very end of the extra period when Deni Avdija decided to bully his way inside and put an end to this game. Deni converts the and-1 as the entire arena is standing up waiting for the last 3 seconds to pass so they can start the celebration. Only thing is… Mikal goes bang bang in the heart of Portland for an astonishing win on the road. 33 points on 62% efficiency and the game winning 3 at the buzzer. A dream case scenario for every hooper. And here’s a little math coincidence to exercise your brain.
Bridges’ game winner marked the 42nd lead change of the game, which ended up with a result of 114 to 113. He also hit a game winner back in 2023 in a Nets uniform against the Hawks, changing the lead for the record breaking 43rd time. That game ended with the same exact result 114-113. Moving on to Boston for the clash of the main title favorites, Thunder vs Celtics. And the visitors started the game furiously, forcing Mazzula to call a timeout just 3 minutes into the game. But then, Derrick White and good old Horford went nuts from downtown.
Both guys hit 3 3’s apiece to tie the game in a blink of an eye. It was that kind of a night for the Celtics. They sinked 15 3’s on 42% shooting in the first half already. But still, OKC held a slight lead. Mostly because of Shai and especially Holmgren who was phenomenal at the start.
In the 2nd half, these two continued doing heavy damage on the offensive end.
The Thunder brought the flamethrower in the 3rd and with a pair of 3’s by Shai and Chet, they got on top by 12 points. But then, the Celtics remembered that they can play traditional basketball as well, and started getting physical. Boi, when Tatum and Brown decide to get inside, there’s really not a lot of people who can stop them. It makes you wonder why they continue to chalk up so many 3’s. Starting from scratch in the final period, they’ve quickly returned to their old habits… Having the much smaller Cason Wallace on him straight up, why is Jaylen firing the 3 with a hand in his face? And after getting the favorable switch with the slower Hertenstein on him, Tatum as well settles for an outside shot. Again, we got the swing swing, but this is not an open shot which Jayson takes it anyway and misses.
The J’s went 0 for 6 from downtown in the final period. Meanwhile the Thunder attacked the paint, and got to the foul line numerous times. As a matter of fact, they took 18 free throws compared to Boston’s 3 in the quarter. This made a big difference. The shot selection as well.
And to put the exclamation point at the end, Shai was surgical.
34 points, 7 assists on 55% from the field and the season sweep against the reigning champions. Alexander deserves all the praise he gets.
In Houston, all the attention went to the heavyweight wrestlemania between Mason Plumlee and Steven Adams. There's 600 pounds combined there, the court must’ve rattled when both guys went down. Regardless, from that point on, it was all rockets.
Jalen Green with 29 points led a balanced Houston attack who got to 17 point lead in the 4th quarter before coach Bud raised the white flag and took KD out of the game. The Rockets bounced back after some struggles and have a 4 game winning streak at the moment.
