I like swashbuckling films, but I haven't seen this Zorro yet.
The film was to be directed by Steven Spielberg himself (who, however, produces) with Andy Garcia in the role of the "fox"; and Robert Rodriguez began filming it, having fled (or kicked out?) from the set after a few days. It ended up in the hands of Bondian Martin Campbell ("Goldeneye") who, humbly, placed himself at the disposal of a very athletic Antonio Banderas and the usually immense Anthony Hopkins. Saber slashes, sexy moods, fragments of spaghetti westerns and the bright colors of Mexico.
Actors considered for the role of Don Diego included Sean Connery and Alain Delon.
Eléna is considered a source of inspiration for a female Zorro TV series, still in development. A first attempt at adaptation occurred in the early 2000s with a single season of "Queen Of Swords".

Coincidences, coincidences. I just watched the (superb) 4K disk of The Mask of Zorro yesterday. Great timing and great extended edition. The movie was, of course, a vastly entertaining look back at a time when they knew what they were doing in Hollywood: Great actors, great action, great cinematography and great music by James Horner.
