What a fragile security is this?! In my country, this kind of scam can never happen. Identity theft is imposible here. How could someone convince a telephone company that he is someone that he is not! without showing his citizenchip card. Here these cards are not only a requirement to show off, but they will also be fully analysed for a possible illegal clone.

This is why I have nearly no apps on my phone and why I don't do banking on my phone.. convenience oh please with technology.. you idiots. Even PayPal can legally screw you too. No app is to benefit you there's many things working behind the scene. Bank of America are huge scammers and ripoff artists. I ditched them decades ago she would never see her money ever again unless maybe the media attention will get them to do it

I personally know an entire group of people who do this. The problem is, this group of people who do this actually includes lawyers, judges and law enforcement. I KNOW THEM PERSONALLY. BUT BECAUSE OF THEIR JOB POSITIONS PEOPLE HAVE NO IDEA.

Had this happen to me in the UK. Started with getting multiple dropped calls to my phone, before I got an email thanking me for reporting my phone as stolen. My phone was right in front of me, but when I looked at the screen it said ‘no service’. Within an hour they’d taken everything out of my bank account, and tried to set up Apple Pay. A horrible experience.

Hang onto your old phones. Use it like an iPod used to be and you’ll get the text messages that go to your phone if you don’t have your phone.

When I bought a new phone, T mobile required my ID and PIN before they would process a new sim with my phone number. Now I know why.

The cell phone companies need to do a better job of verifying someone's ID before just switching sims. This is a cell provider issue and needs fixed at that level.

I'm not sure if I believe this story. They need to tell us how that initial conversation with that person on the phone was like.

How in seconds she was without a phone and claiming to have just answered the phone. She authorized someone to do something and now she want us to believe all she did was answered the call🙄

Two factor authentic is B/S,its up to the phone company to verify account identity before swapping Sims, my friend got a phone given to her from her son, it had a nano sim, she had to prove her identity with photo licence, and another form of identification, her details were recorded at the phone provider retail store

Had Bank of America not reimbursed her for her $17K loss, she could have sued Verizon because the way the money was stolen was beyond her control. If the scammer contacted her and she gave away her password then she would have been at fault.

I got scam from Wells Fargo. I know it was one of their employees. I received a phone call from Wells Fargo saying that they needed it to close my card because someone was trying to use it to purchase something. She kept me on the phone for a few minutes and asking me this and that and that’s when I got a notification the I just wired $25,000 to someone in Florida. I work just a cross the street from Wells Fargo I run there to have the manager stop the transaction. He got on the phone and spoke to someone in the main office. I was still in there when the transaction was complete and I was devastated. This was my lifetime savings. I’m 67 years old and it took me years to save up this $$$. I keep on trying but nothing happened. I reported to the police. I looked on line and found the recipient from Florida. He’s in jail and the bank couldn’t get the $ Back. In my opinion, they should have refunded me but they didn’t and said there’s nothing I could do. It’s been almost a year now and I have been trying but everything I had done made no difference. $25,000 was my lifetime savings.

So here's my question... TWO factor authenication usually means that you need something other than a code sent to your phone. Did they also have her passwords? How did they manage to get the bank to send the authentication code in the first place? Guessing she didn't have facial recognition on... but still there is usually an initial login step that just having the phone doesn't get past...?
