I appreciate it, but I’ve already tried basically every optimization suggestion. I’m committed to this, it’s already blown away what my PC could do and is way more stable. I’ll have more videos soon.
And cost… my CPU alone has a MSRP of $4000 lol
ALSO this video is in 8K and only took 5 minutes to render. My PC literally couldn't render 8K videos at all w/o crashes due to limited 24GB VRAM.

I had the same problem at one stage. I too tried everything under the sun doing deep dives into possible causes.
It came, it went, then came back, then went again...touch wood, haven't had it for 8 months now.
At the end of the day, I'am leaning to one or the other, both, or a combination of certain versions of both.
>>>>Nvidia's drivers & Windows updates.<<<<<
(one or the other aren't playing ball with each other until another update comes along)
My biggest suspicion is either these two are the main reason (but not exluding also possible tweaking of settings & services running, may help fix the problem as well)

Time to .. switch to Linux and install a RT-enabled kernel. Yes, it can get more "crashy" (I'm looking at YOU, Mixxx!), but latency issues are a thing of the past :D

The only annoyance is that the numerous audio servers and solutions are the same chaos as on Windows and Mac OS.

native USB SSDs are probably a better buy for the price right now - just a little more expansive than USB NVME, but still a lot cheaper than thunderbolt NVMe, and so much more power efficient than both

25 years using only pc’s for music recording/mixing and video work. 1 month ago I bought a used Mac mini m1 just to test it anddddddddd I was blown away!!!!! It almost did what my 2019 super pc did. No heat no noise no nothing. Just ordered my Mac Studio max and already started learning Macintosh plus Logic (which is super efficient and fast) along with my Davinci resolve. I’m a Mac fan boy now :)
Cheers

My gaming PC (3080Ti) has 1500 latency in LatencyMon. My streaming PC (regular 3080) has almost none. They both have the same exact motherboard and CPU. I don't get it.

This is a hard core solution for me. I mean, I'm going through the exact same thing, and yeah, I get it. I'm so angry. No fix after a year for all the DPC latency pops. With this as a solution, all my apps that were Microsoft only, would now have to be replaced for new ones,
re-purchased, and re-learned. I guess NOW, I WILL have to learn MAC's operating system. And if I need to adjust something i.e go into the directories for something, or edit, fix, adjust, or make new settings, I will have to learn the MAC Op system. I've never used a MAC before. I don't know. I have to applaud you for taking that on, but my brain will explode the first time I have to record something, and realize the UI is so different it'll take me a year just to figure out where the record button is in a new DAW. But, I guess you figured out, it just ain't never getting better. Windows has finally screwed it up so bad, there's no solution but to leave. I've been avoiding this for the past year. But, I'm beginning to realize they just don't care. Thanks for the video. It IS a wakeup call.

I know that Windows does not like the NUMA layout of threadripper and it's scheduling for it is lackluster. Apparently if you create a Windows virtual machine in Linux, you get better performance, especially if you lie about the NUMA/topology layout of the cpu.

These issues will only be fixed in a whole next Windows update, like Windows 12 etc.

I don't understand your issues at all. I've been on a Phenom II X4, an FX-8370 and now a Ryzen 5 3600 and haven't had any of these DPC issues. Maybe it's your memory speed? I'm terrible at overclocking but my 64GB 3200MT kit is currently running at 3600 and I have the voltage just slightly bumped on everything but the CPU. Is this just a prosumer thing? I want to say it's best to roll back to cheap junk and find something proven but it sounds like you've never had that, even in the AM3 days. How did you even get here after that? Sounds hella cursed.

I gave up back in April. Went for an M2 mini for my bass and guitar recording. Yeah I know Apple is stealing money from everyone, Rossman want Apple to shutdown, yada yada, but I just want to record my f*cking guitar. I don't have time to fight politics and all that. And no, I don't have time to fix Linux installation. I'm facing insane amounts of Linux as softwrae engineer, I don't want to deal with that on my free time.

And yeah, everything is working as is on my M2 mini. I can't believe it. Now I'm using 3 machines. Mac is exclusively for recording. I'm still using the other machines for other workflows.

yeah that was why i ditched AMD (among other reasons) but DPC was a major issue. Haven't had any issue in that department since going back to intel and insuring my drivers and settings are optimized using sysinternals tools and some easy power management settings in bios. it will be interesting to see what comes up with your mac so definitely keep us posted.

Random thoughts that came up when watching this. I don't really have much of context about this specific problem outside this video, but have struggled with pretty much every windows related audio issue one could have.

Audio is sometimes so mystical when it comes to performance. It needs to be real time so in a sense it taxes system very evenly, but many audio chains run only on one core. Example: in DAW you can have many tracks, and and one plugin on every one and system will run just fine as all those tracks are processed by different cores. If you flip the situation around and put multiple plugins on one track, you will tax only one core. (Source: Try it yourself)

Early threadrippers seem to have some issues with low latency audio, where buffer size is small. IIRC it has something to do with AMDs infinity fabric and latency that causes. (Source: ScanProAudio articles, where they test threadrippers)

I totally understand the frustration with tech. Apple machines seem to be more problem free if you have performance overhead, but as soon as you start to reach the limit it can be buggy mess. On the other hand apples pricing model is so frustrating and you still leave some performance (or LOTS of ram) on the table vs top specced PC.

I had insane audio drop out problems with OBS on both Intel and AMD. Other software seemed fine. 2 different audio interfaces - the same thing - every 3 minutes or so there would be a 21 ms gap. So what helped was OBS Asynchronous Audio plugin.

Possible fix to anyone having crackling audio issues in Windows.
I installed Equalizer APO on my audio interface.
enabled the "troubleshooting options" checkbox to disable "Use original APO" checkboxes.
if you have a lot of processing (vst plugins), it also helps to enable "Allow silent buffer modification"
TL;DR
Disable original APOs

If you are using intel 12 or 13th gen, the part that handles io ring stuff has been moved to motherboard instead of being on cpu. Could you try an earlier intel or amd? It might fix it..

i had these sound issues before and thought it was DPC related and it just turned out that the power in the house i lived in sucked. over time a compressor from the fridge or AC or just something could kick on enough times while my computer is on and my audio will slowly robot out and lose sync. unplug the audio interface and it fixes temporarily. no plug in my house was different. no power supply was different. had the circuit for that room rewired by an electrician with some big amp service on a brand new circuit breaker and it was gone. i later moved and also haven't had it since.
not saying it wasn't or isn't ACTUALLY dpc latency for you causing that... i might be saying that the dpc latency could be a red herring with weird things that you'd never think was actually causing it, causing it.

gratz on the mac though. been using a m1 mac mini base model since they came out as my main computer on my 4k hdr tv at my couch and its perfect. even with the smallest drive and lowest ram i can still edit in resolve and have tons of tabs open in whatever browser (i use edge). my avermedia usb hdr 4k card works just fine with it. recording audio in OBS used to be impossible but it got better. its a wonderful computer that doesn't make any sound and is just great to have going all night with a queue of transcodes too.

too bad that apple is absolutely wrecking macos slowly over time. the ui has been going down hill, their priorities are strange. been beta testing macos also since i got the mac mini lol cuz thats just what i do with computers i get.

Windows is hot garbage for audio and MS should absolutely take sh1t for it, but it is also hilarious how much jank you need to pull to get a normal pro setup working with a Mac, and how little control you get over some basic software things. But the industry keeps sucking it up, so here we are.

Btw, Threadripper making it worse sounds like potentially a CPU scheduler issue (and the windows scheduler is also hot garbage). If you're on 11, did you try going back to 10? I heard the scheduler got worse in 11.

DPC latency doesn't mean your system can't keep up, it means there's a specific kernel driver (often your video driver or WiFi) that isn't returning from its deferred procedure call (DPC) in the time it was allotted. Generally doesn't have anything to do with any other background or other processes on the computer. On my production PC, I use the NVidia Studio drivers, as they do a bit less to try to max out FPS and win Gaming benchmarks.

Most tweak guides on the internet are simply wrong. For example: optimizing for background processes means you are giving MORE time to background services and executing code which can't be traced back to a root interactive window -- the window for the app you're using. I hate that that info is out there. Most people make their computers worse, and don't back out the changes which didn't help, compounding the problem.

Custom-built PCs and gaming PCs can have issues like this for sure. Most DIY hardware is geared around gaming, which is all about FPS, not audio.

The Mac Studio is nice, but if you wanted to stick with Windows and not go to macOS, you could have purchased a PC from a builder that specializes in the music and video production industries. Plenty of them out there, and they know which components work together for the best performance for these scenarios. Sounds like going to a Mac lets you expand your content and courses anyway, so probably not a concern for you, but it may be for others going along the journey with you.

Disclosure: I work in Windows at Microsoft, specifically on apps and tech for musicians.

Da Vinci resolve I gave up on windows due the many issues with audio, I just thought it was a useless program, but everyone else is talking wonders, and my audios interfaces I have returned them cuz I was nevertheless happy with it, and still people say that works. Dood, I feel your frustration; I've been dealing with these issues for 25 years. It seems to me, however, that you may have simply lost the silicon lottery, here. You can configure two IDENTICAL PCs; one will have DPC gremlins and the other will not. It's crazy but that's how fickle these systems can be.
