Why Do Catholics Believe in Purgatory?

If anyone doubts purgatory, you are not believing the words of the Virgin Mary who speaks of it.

I was told that the fires of purgatory in the area of brink of hell are like the fires of hell but a soul has hope to see God. Now I'm being told the fires are are of God's love. Could the fires of God's love be the "other end" of purgatory?

Why does the Eastern Orthodox Church not believe in Purgatory - seeing you guys were the same Church for over 1,000 years after Christ's death? Which also begs the question, why was the concept of Purgatory only introduced in the Middle Ages? The other thing that confuses me is that in 1 Cor 3:11-15 it talks about this purification happening on the Day of Judgement - so how come people are supposedly in Purgatory now?

I, as a European Catholic, see so much justification and condescension to Protestants here that, frankly, I am amazed and very uncomfortable.
There is no Protestant Bible - there is one Bible that the heretic Luther "edited" to the extent that he initially removed 25 books from it.

When does it happen? If you can't pray for those in hell bc there's no longer salvation, and those who are in heaven don't need it anymore, how would we know?? How can we know??

i am a former catholic after reading the Bible i realized priests lie in many things and now i am out of their false teachings i will said something that make it clear that purgatory is not real the thief in the cross at one side of Yeshua believe in God and Yeshua said to the thief TODAY you will be with me, Yeshua didn't said well today you will go to another place to be purified and after some time you will be with me NOOO God said TODAY you will be with me, according to priests souls go to that place that they call purgartory to get purified if that is true the thief needed also purification but God said TODAY you will be with me that is because purgatory don't exist Yeshua paid in the cross for our sins we need to Believe in Him, believe that the sacrifice of God is More than enough to forgive us and repent of our sins Priests are able to lie because many catholics don't read the bible they are still getting money charging people for mass for their death love ones they are just saying lies

I'm sorry, but this idea of purgatory is based largely on speculation, not Scripture. This doctrine is in no way like the Trinity, where we have various passages throughout the Bible supporting the doctrine. Purgatory is based on speculation and non-canonical documents.

My argument against Purgatory is not that it isn't in the Bible, it is because Purgatory enstates Jesus's sacrifice on the cross was a failure and that he did not pay for all of our sins.

Yes the second great commandment is about living your neighbor. This one I think is broken by most people who say they are christian, what God hates most is man hating his fellow man, but many Christians are quilty if this. Even in the many Sunday school classes of the many denominations,this is not taught because of the widespread racism that excist in the United States. Go to confession , pray to Mary, and love your neighbor. And yes I'm a cradle Catholic of Sicilian decent, and yes I firmly believe in purgatory!

There's No purgatory in Hell

The New Catholic Encyclopedia admits: "In the final analysis, the Catholic doctrine on purgatory is based on Tradition, NOT SACRED SCRIPTURE!"

Nowhere in scripture does it state that when we die we are “called into God’s self-giving life-giving love” as stated in the video. When a person dies “Their body returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it (Ecclesiastes 12:7).

It remains that way either until the second coming of Yeshua/Jesus (for believers in Yeshua) or the Great White Throne Judgement (Revelation 20:11-15) where non-believers will be thrown into the lake of fire.

The concept of purgatory after a person dies is contrary to Yeshua’s finished work on the cross (John 19:28-30). Basing the idea of purgatory on ancient beliefs as stated in the video does not make it correct or biblical.

1 Corinthians 3:13
The fire mentioned will come on "the Day" meaning the "day of our Lord Yeshua the Messiah" in 1 Corinthians 1:8. This is the day of Yeshua's judgment that will come during the end times. This is when a person will be judged for their works as a believer. It is not to judge their sin.

People must put their faith in Yeshua while they are still alive to receive eternal life. Once they have and then pass away, they will be raised to everlasting glory when He returns. If they still needed “further purification” as taught by the Catholic church, then then the blood of Yeshua is not enough (1 John 1:7).

In the Compendium of The Catechism of the Catholic Church, it states that Purgatory is for those who “die in God’s friendship”. This would seem to indicate that it is for believers in Yeshua.

Sadly, there are some who follow the Catholic religion whose family members are non-believers and have passed away that find false hope in this doctrine. Asking someone, either living or dead (the Saints), for help getting a loved one into Heaven, will not change the fate of the deceased.

If it could, then Yeshua was crucified for nothing.

Scripture refers God as refiner's fire and fuller's soap (Malachi 3:2). There must be reason why Scripture says so - both have something to do with refining and cleansing. Zech 13:8-9 says that God will put some into fire as one refines silver and test gold.

The main reason why Protestants have problem with purgatory is because they follow the teaching of the Reformers of double imputation: Through faith alone they will receive Christ's righteousness imputed on or credited to them while their sins, past AND future, are imputed on or credited to Christ, who bore them on the cross. If all their sins, past and future are credited to Christ who bore them on the cross, then purgatory will make what Christ did insufficient. But is double imputation scriptural? Ezekiel 18:20 says "the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself". Both righteousness and wickedness are not transferrable!

Purgatory is something you made up...HOW COULD YALL POSSIBLY KNOW...LIES AFTER LIES AFTER LIES.

It’s important to read the scriptures. In 1 Corinthians 3, it is not the person that is being put through the fire, but each persons “work” that is tested.
1 Corinthians 3:11 “For no one can lay any other foundation than the one we already have – Jesus Christ. Know anyone who builds on that foundation May use gold, silver, jewels, wood, hey or straw. But there is going to come a time of testing at the judgment day to see what kind of work each builder has done. Everyone’s work will be put through the fire to see weather or not it keeps its value. If the work survived the fire, that builder will receive a reward. But if the work is burned up, the builder we will suffer great loss. The builders themselves will be saved, but like someone escaping through a wall of flames.”

Why wasn’t the concept of purgatory discussed by the orthodox synod in any of the councils they had? Oh wait it’s because it’s a baseless concept that only the Catholics brought up after splitting from the synod… it’s from the same church that thinks that the pope is “infallible” too

If Hell may be crowded, imagine Purgatory as we are all sinners. Not a nice place to be, so use the Catholic tools to get out of there asap (scapular highly recommended), frequent confession, etc…

I do not believe in this Catholic belief of Purgatory,I believe the Catholic Church has put fear into it's parishioner's,and they fear going against the Catholic Church so they adhere to this false teaching that twists God's word to mean what they want it to.

Then what happened to the people who are suffer during the death process in the hospital beds? so they have to Suffer twice? Is that fair? You don't have a choice to be in this world. Therefore the entire life is just about suffering! God created us to suffer throughout from the inception to death and post death!! It is not that I'm not believing in God but how many stages of fire? Jesus was a prophet he died for his cause ! 🤔🤨
