Any idea how to put images on menu so they work as links in subcategories??

I am trying to work on the main menu from hours and now i know why i was not able to do it!! In the configuration page of the main menu, it does not show the menu as you have it!!! I can't see categories and others, it literally does not show a thing. Do you maybe know why? I am going to be crazy for this. Thanks in the meanwhile
