Let Psychic resist Fairy!

So...let's make psychic super effective against fairy?

Dunno what you're on about. As far as I'm aware, Fighting has long been seen as one of the best types in the game. Sure, it was an absolute joke in gen1, but it was strong against both the new types in gen2, and would only get better with the addition of better moves (really, it came a long way from the days of submission). But maybe it fell off a bit in recent gens, since Fairy feels like it was designed as a Fighting counter almost as much as it is a Dragon counter. And yeah, Fairy taking away one of Psychic's few real advantages hurt it a lot, but on the other hand, Fairy also made Poison far more viable, so there's that.

Really, when it comes to type relationships, fixing Psychic seems like one hell of a balancing act. For one thing, it's pretty unusual that neither Psychic's Bug and Ghost weaknesses nor Psychic's Poison advantage carry the usual offensive+defensive synergy (Bug and Ghost takes neutral damage from Psychic, while Psychic takes neutral damage from Poison). However, when you really think about it, just adding on the respective resistances doesn't seem like it'd work out that well overall. As much as Bug desperately needs something, giving it a Psychic resistence only seems like it'd hurt another type that barely has anything worthwhile (and that goes even more so for Ghost resisting Psychic, given how Ghost is a pretty good type all around). And even though Poison got a significant buff from Fairy's mere existence, it's still far from being in a position where it should be nerfed due to an additional type resisting it. Though, maybe both Psychic and Bug could gain some more viability if they just tinkered Fairy a bit. Remove Fairy's Bug resistance (I don't know why that's even there to begin with, since it only nerfed what was already one of the worst offensive types in the game), and maybe make Psychic resist Fairy while not being strong against it (probably not the most sensible type relation, but the same could be said of most of Psychic's relations regardless).

You know... At this point it makes me wonder if Fairy type is overpowered or if all the other times are just underpowered.

Fairy type introduction was one of the biggest mistakes gamefreak ever did. It was not thought out at all and had probably zero testing involved. Usually, types have design philosophies like how psychic usually are low def, but high spD and SpA or how rock types usually have high def low spD. As OP as dragons were, they were usually designed as purely offensive pokemon. The only design philosophy behind fairy was like dur duh dur it pink so it fairy. They basically grabbed all pink pokemon in the back catalog and was like okay it pink so it fairy now good luck errebuddy LOL! Overnight Fairy pokemon became OP due to the inherently strong resistances/immunities/weaknesses and the fact that there was now a fairy pokemon for anything you ever could want. Tanky, Sp Attackers, Phys attackers, sweepers, status, wall breakers, etc, etc etc. You can easily build a fairy only team with full coverage and fill all the team needs too. Fairy typing has no design philosophy and gamefreak still continues to have little thought put in to making pokemon with this type beyond their color pallet.

Such a clickbait title. They didn’t “ruin” them. Psychic types are still fast with potential to sweep and most of them get access to stat boosting, recovery and fairy/ghost coverage with some of them getting great abilities like Magic Bounce and Synchronize. If anything they ruined fire types with Stealth Rock and they haven’t recovered since because GF refuses to nerf that broken move.

They should add a freeze-dry style move to phsychic types called spoon bend that's super effective against steel.

I feel like the fact that Fighting-Types were extremely common and powerful in Gen 5 was overlooked here. In a way, it was a potential indirect buff to Psychic-Types, since they were the single most reliable way to deal with Fighting-Types. There was also the addition of Magic Bounce and Magic Guard to a few Psychic-Types, which boosted their viability.
The Fairy Type, I think, was more of a band-aid fix in how it was implemented. It's a type that was meant to help with the Dragons and Fighting-Types wrecking the game, and it also gives people a reason to actually use Poison-Type and Steel-Type STAB, two types that weren't really used offensively outside of a few specific cases like Bullet Punch Scizor. It also made Fire-Types more useful defensively, since they now had another type to resist.
Even after all of that, I'd still say I'm not exactly mad about what they did to Psychic-Types. They still have their uses, to be sure, and in a game series that has increasingly avoided proper balancing, I'd say Psychic-Types have been in a decent place for a while now.

Very minor point, Cresselia wasn't even the first to hit 3 World Championship wins. Metagross accomplished this first, winning in 2008, 2009 and 2012.

And since Cresselia's 3rd in 2015, Five more Pokemon have made it to 3 World Championship Wins. Snorlax, Salamence, Thundurus, Incineroar and Amoonguss.

Gen 1 not having much poison types, bulbasaur line, oddish line, wheedle line, ekans, grimer, koffing, both male and female nidoran lines, venonat, zubat line, ghastly line, bellsprout line, and the tentacool line, that’s a total of 13 poison types in Gen 1 yeah not many that’s only 3 less then the 16 water types and 16 normal types and flying types only have 1 more then poison type making it 14 there were plenty of poison types.

i hate the argument that all types should be equal. Some are going to be and SHOULD be better than others, but to equalise offer niche benefits for bad types. ie poison being immune to toxic/psn is huge.

The physical special split hurt psychic types even more than you think. Psychic, the move, used to have a chance to lower both special attack and defence before the split. An alakazam that already functioned as an absolute special tank could lower the opponent’s damage output too. The chance of this happening was one in three too, so it wasn’t very unlikely. It’s hard to say which hurt the psychic type more in gen two to be honest. Dark typing or the split.

Awesome video and great research. The type has fallen hard - but there have still been some great mons in recent years that succeeded despite the type.

I wonder if the Psychic type needs a type matchup rework (where psychic picks up a type resistance and/or super effective type) or if the game needs more stronger Psychic type Pokemon. The new DLC brought in a bunch of new psychic types that all doing good/okay but they are all good because of their stats or movepool which can cause some pretty bad power creep down the line. I think if Psychic became super effective against a type (like Fairy or something) that it will see an increase in viability.

I think it is worth noting that Pyschic type does not offer any additional effects as well. Eletric types have become immune to paralysis. Grass types are not affected by spore moves or Leech Seed.

Honestly I still use a ton of psychic types for bad typing matchups they make up for it with amazing abilities & stats they r still my 3rd fave typing I love water, ghost, then psychic the mind is a powerful weapon in itself it’s one of the best muscles to train

Just imagine how weird would it have been if sw97 version of steel and dark types were the final ones. Dark would've been trash, water would be even better, so being a steel type would not be as great as it is rn, so maybe Psychic would still be a great type. Just poor fighting type tho,
