Those glass gates won't stop shoplifters, they're at checkouts. Shoplifters usually don't even go through the checkouts. Walmarts in my area have started using one-way gates. I've seen people just push them open. They're only waist height, too. Really easy to just hop over. The solution to stopping shoplifting is to not increase prices with minimum wage increases. I guarantee most shoplifters are stealing because they can't afford what they want or need, or plan to resell the stuff on ebay or something to try to afford something they want or need. It comes down to a financial issue. Shoplifting was almost unheardof back when minimum wage was plenty to live off.

We have them here in Australia too, and l don't steal, and had to have them to open it because l clearly paid for my shopping, went to walk through it and it was not opening for me, so l told em, "f.....g open it or l will smash it pieces" and they happily agreed and left it open..

What people have to realize that these thieves are stealing something from you-your time. Let’s say an average grocery run is 15 minutes. Now you can double or more because you have to ask an associate to open the shelf for you. They may be helping other customers so you’ll have to wait instead of grab and check out which add to the time tremendously.

I feel for the retailers, but if they have to chain things up, there needs to be an assistant standing by waiting to unlock on request, rather than making the customer chase them down, if they want continued business.
