Skinamarink (2022) - Movie Review

I can appreciate your take but for me I thought that the movie captures child trauma in an artistic way that I really enjoyed.

I can honestly say that this was the first movie in ages that scared the living shit out of me, particularly the ending. Nothing was wrapped up so it went on in my head for days, and nights, after. Loved it, but I couldn't ever watch it again.

I think seeing it in theaters was the problem. This is a movie you shouldve watched in complete darkness, alone, and with your earbuds in. Dont get me wrong, you are right about the movie being in complete shots and weird sounds but as a kid being a afraid of the dark and having no idea what is in the dark and then hearing a strange sound is scary. Patience is key to this movie. Shouldve stayed home and watched it.

This movie fucked me up real bad when I first watched it. Unknowingly for myself I created the perfect viewing atmosphere: I was home alone, I watched it on a very big tv with max volume with lights out at night. I didn't expect that it will hit me so hard by the end of it that I will be really begging myself to turn it off. It was like borderline panic attack. Yeah, it had some moments that dragged, but when it wanted to get serious, it sure did, especially in the last 20 minutes. I was so hyped about this movie after watching it because almost no other movie gave me emotions this intense (come and see is the other film). And then I decided to go to the theatre with my buddies on skinamarink. It was a disaster. It was not scary and people around me didn't help it with munching on popcorn and talking about how dumb the film is. So if you want to experience it really, go watch it in home with the right setup. This film has its flaws and it's totally not for everyone but if you let it it can get pretty deep under your skin

I enjoyed it, wouldn't say it scared me much but I was really interested by it, for sure not for everyone though

This movie seems like you need to be in a very specific mindset in order it to work, but from what I've heard, those that are in the mindset when viewing the movie say it's one of the few movies that really sticks with you in terms of actually unsettling you.

Saw this a few days ago and I just couldn't get into it. Always pretty open to different movies, experimental and otherwise. I was missing something, but good lord was this a bore and chore to watch. Just felt pretentious IMO.

I'm just going to say it was the most dull, agonizing movie I've ever seen. Room was pitch black, and all but I can't say how many times I almost tapped out. The horror, the tension never did nothing for me.

I'm so glad to see a review from someone else that didn't like it. Everyone else seemed to be really into this movie but I found it frustrating and not enjoyable to watch.
It was like looking at one of those older AI images where at first it looks like a normal photo, but the longer you look at it, you realize you can't identify a single object in the image.
I agree it would have been better as a short.

This movie sucked don't watch it.

Even the cool stuff towards the end doesn't really get to shine because the nothingness just drags the entire film down so much

Really love your reviews, Cody. The last bit where you said you were happy for the director and glad doors could be opening for his career, even though his film wasn't your cup of tea. That's so rare to hear in a negative review.

This movie creeped me out. It made my imagination go overboard and that made it good in my opinion. But I can completely understand how and why someone wouldn't like this film at all.

As a person who loves to interpret films I understood what horrors the director was trying to show us. This is a very artistic, slow burn film and I think it was enjoyable. I do agree it could’ve been a short but I’m sure there were reasons why not. If the directors purpose was the stir up emotions it definitely did whether good or bad for the film.

This movie sounds like something you might find in your underwear afrer a weekend camping! 🤔

As with you, I can appreciate the experimentation, but feel the experiment was an artist failure. I have never seen a film I wanted to be over so badly. It does have a couple of briefly creepy moments, but most of it is as dull as can be. The director deserves praise for getting this film made for a tiny budget and getting it in some theaters. Even though I didn't enjoy the film, I'm still happy for his success. I hope he takes his profits and makes something better.

Finaly watched this one and I dig this one....as expected this was not your cup of tea 😂 but thanks for the honest review I totaly understand your points. This movie is really exhausting even if you like it

I hated it. I didn't get it. But I can't stop telling everyone about it, so technically the director of this film won!

I didn't get it. I watched it once. Then, I watched every video essay I could find about it, then tried to watch it again. I still found absolutely nothing of interest while watching it. I feel like either I am being gaslit, or I am actually too stupid to get it. To me, the movie doesn't even seem like a movie. It seems like a... nothing. I don't know how to make movies so I can't judge the "worth" of the film. I'm just judging how I interacted with the work.

I would have enjoyed Skinamarink a lot more if:

1) It wasn't quite as long
2) If it didn't feature very young children
And 3) If maybe it could have been more "vignette" style, where the "Skinamarink" targets several different homes in rapid succession, like some sort of supernatural pandemic type of thing.

For instance, every 10-15 minutes-ish, switch to a different house at night, and the people are all reacting to the "Skinamarink" in their own way. And each house's TV is playing a different surreal cartoon on them as it goes on.

Or something. This movie felt so "first draft". So much potential. At least it's interesting to think about and discuss.

People who loved this movie are the kind of people who claim to see the economic and political “subtext” in a painting of a coconut where the artist used panda shit smeared onto the canvas.

It's unsettling and like something a mental patient would make. It's not good and has no rewatchablility. But it is a bit unsettling which is something I love about horror

Dude you can't say you "champion this guy's success and you appreciate what he's doing" while also ripping apart his movie because it wasn't your style of horror. This review has easily turned me off from any other reviews you do

i share your impression on this movie. the concept and visual style have a lot of potential, A LOT, but lets be honest this is barely a movie. The director could use this in the long run as something to build on in the future or others could use it as inspiration as well so I think its a good thing that this experiment exists. The unsettling calm going on throughout the house and the flashes hiting the walls and distant muffled sounds coming from the TV reminded me a bit of the PT demo that got released for a now cancelled Silent Hill game back then. And thats what I think this movie also happens to be, a demo for something more complete and fleshed out down the line.

Probably much better than anything Yoko Ono would film.

This just didn’t do it for me. I can appreciate them trying to be experimental, but that’s where my praise ends. It was just boring. I get that it derives some the stylistic choices from analog horror found on internet ARGs, but maybe somethings should just stay as internet ARGs.

I think the shots of the house created a lot of tension for me, that feeling that something could appear at any moment, I really liked that aspect but I agree it should’ve been 40 mins tops

Okay a a skinamarink lover I'll explain why I enjoy it. I watch the same movies over and over and over the shining is my main one. I don't watch it for the plot or the story and anything besides how hypnotic it is to look at. Something with the visuals and the audio just click for me and I can kinda zone out and just vibe with the overlook. This movie skipped all the story and plot points and also even skipped acting all together and just went straight to the vibey hypnosis for me. I can pop this movie in. Pick any chapter and just zone out. It's cozy.

I absolutely love unique horror movies and I'm always excited to watch an unconventional one so I was excited to watch this. I just found it on prime video or Tubi looking for a good horror movie to watch. I can't remember which movie app it was, but it has to be the dumbest movie I've ever seen. It made absolutely no sense. I guess I'm not one of those people with an IQ of 160 that doesn't get it.
