I always thought of Uranus as a female that identifies as a woman but prefers to dress masculine (with the occasional feminine outfit especially in Crystal and the manga).

I grew up wanting to watch Sailor Moon and not being allowed to. So when the manga was rereleased in the US when I was in my mid 20s, I read it. I had come out only a year or so before, and let's just say it reconfirmed that I was not straight in many ways. Partly because it was so clear that Usagi was bi and how much her reactions around pretty people echoed mine. Also may have turned me into a Seiya x Usagi shipper but that's something else.

Sailor Moon (DIC) was my first anime and I fell in love with it instantly. I never minded the censoring. The show still made sense and still had fantasy/adventure/romance and what more could you ask for. I did watch the original Japanese episodes later on and if I had to choose I would still take the North American DIC dub. As for gay/lesbian relationships in Sailor Moon, I think Sailor Moon's creator did that for a "wow" effect. It's intriguing to see "forbidden" love and if the Japanese were as conservative in those times as I think they were, they were really exited to see these relationships.

I am queer and I love watching Sailor Moon, also very funny in the german dub is that they sometimes use Haruka the he/him pronounce without realising that Haruka is a girl, which makes Haruka a nonbinary girl that uses he/him pronounce in a way that the Starlight accidently use the she/her pronounce in their civilian form. Shame on the first german localization that did the same with our boys Fisheye and Zoisite. Even after the fashion episode where Fisheyes chest area is revealed to be a guy.

I was jealous of several boy anime characters who could pass as female. The prime example for me is Assassination Classroom.

Loved Haruka best as a kid when I read the manga, grew up to not give a shit about gender and personally view my sexual identity as non-discriminating. I think that says it all 🤣

it's funny that you said that since in crystal and the manga Pluto has a crush on king Endymion if you pay attention to that one scene with Pluto and Endymion when he gives her a task or compliments her, she starts to smile more and blushing really pink when she's with him.

It's been a long time since I read the Manga (I guess I should read it again, twist my rubber arm), but I think that Setsuna had a small crush on Endymion from a distance. She knew it would never work for either of them, so she decided to give that love to Chibi-Usa instead, allowing her to get a time key and taking the portal to present day Tokyo (for the time the story was published). But I could be wrong! I think that being able to see how love doesn't always work out, and doing good with that affection regardless, is a very important lesson to learn.

Naoko Takeuchi's original manga artwork depicts the Shitennou in relationships with each of the Inner Sailor Guardians. Sailor Moon Crystal further expounds on the relationships in one of the Dark Kingdom arc finale episodes. Jadeite was in love with Sailor Mars, Nephrite had a relationship with Sailor Jupiter, Kunzite was in love with Sailor Venus, and Zoisite was with Sailor Mercury. The Shitennou had these relationships with the Inner Guardians shortly before the fall of the Moon Kingdom.

i do find it ironic how in the 90s and such the west didn't approve of lgbtq and any other things not considered "normal" by society, but then in the 2000s you have video games where people are using homophobic slurs and such
