Is a tesla motor & drive unit better depending on year of manufacture, & if so which one as longevity is a major concern?

first of all, you don't just replace on part of battery. you say battery has 200000 miles and only one of the battery cell is bad if replace only one of the battery. So you replace one and 6 months later another battery goes bad and comes back again. So this could go on and on till you install all new battery. At 200000 miles all the battery should be replaced if cost is not more than value of the vehicle. Ater 200000 miles get a new car.

How did you figure out what heat oil to use for the Tesla reduction gears. I’m trying to get my shop into it EVs and that is one of the problems I’m coming across early on. Is it their spec only or is there a viscosity listed?

I found the video very interesting. Not being aware of Toyota and MB using the Tesla motors. The various tools and their use was of interest.
I have had a C-Max Ford hybrid for 10 years and enjoyed it with no real issues. Do you come across those very often?

I question the environmental sales point. The energy to charge this car has to come from somewhere.
There is not enough wind power to support a huge grid of these vehicles, and it would take several square MILES of solar panels for one of these electricity hogs. So, somewhere carbon is being burned into CO2 to power these cars.

@user-cr5yy4te3i - 09.12.2023 22:58

The drive train of these electric vehicles is inherently less expensive than conventional internal combustion.
Far fewer parts and far less precision machining.......How about it Elon Musk? When are we going to purchase your cars at true value?????

@user-cr5yy4te3i - 09.12.2023 22:53

My first impression of the battery is the connections between the individual cells......Thousands of them.
I am thinking the connection technology (soldering/welding) is critical. Lots of current and any inherent resistance wastes lots of power, not to mention reliability. Anybody who has dealt with large scale electronic systems are familiar with connection issues..

Think of Tesla like the Mercedes of a standard auto service plan setup, only instead Alex is the source which Tesla uses as a true service pro. Little concerned about talk about coolant needed for these batteries, maybe some additional staging lowering the C's instead of Elon always wanting to race Lambos would be nicer, especially in hybrid operations.

EVs has been here and will be here to last. Don't know why Elon presents items like the Cybertruck as it's ready come get it and Munro jumps up and down 'still a proto' and clearly is as does not quite make street legality even if given off road classification. I will look for improvements and wait for std OBD components, regular gauge clusters so it can work in 'valet mode', VIN and use of a good North American finishing plant, and a way to incorporate 4WD using a good SLEV (3800) to the rear and/or a solid Onan gas gen for when the individual cell voltage drops and you are out in the cold. I will say occasionally those electric golf carts if a elec motor hits a dead spot on load look out. At least with lead acid flying vent caps are only a minor nuisance and LiFePO4s like to get puffy.

No mention of cycle life .if the rest of the cells are close to the end why would you fix it .would you put a new transmission in a rusty car with 350 000 miles on it no way .the government should never let these companies make it har to open an service expensive batties .i own a hybrid but would not touch a full ev .

I cant believe anyone would buy an EV Unless they have Solar charging. Other that that, for the most part, you are using sulphur coal produced power and that negates any benefit from the battery except for the environmental damage done to the environment by producing the battery, then disposing it. Nothing in production today beats a ULE petrol engine

Really well presented and explained.
No car is without issues, but the marketing around EV’s glosses over the costs.
Tesla don’t mention having to replace your motors every 40-50k miles due to a design flaw, or the cost of replacement battery packs approaching $20k.
I also like that you try to rebuild battery packs as treating battery packs as disposable goes against the “green” credentials of this technology.

If you start to replace the module, what makes you think the rest of them won't follow suit? I think it is a lost cause not to replace the whole thing. And how do you guarantee it once you have sold it to someone? Lastly, I have seen a lot of videos where they go up in flames. I wouldn't park that car in a garage that is attached or part of the house.

Really good video. I worked at Tesla for 6 years in the REMAN department working both on the Model S/X drive units as well as the battery packs. It was very interesting seeing the tooling that you guys have come up with. Great job guys. My only question is how do you guys test out the drive units and batteries once you fix them? At Tesla they actually hook the batteries up to high voltage equipment and through lots of software programs run a multitude of tests. Also the batteries are cycling coolant while testing. So there is lots of very expensive equipment needed for this. Not to mention that the drive units are put into a Dyno machine and tested. I would imagine this would add to the cost of just repairing these things. Just something to consider.

NOBODY likes change, however these EV’s are a opportunity to make killer money when you compare to the re&re dealership mentality! Repair is a golden road in my opinion... and I hate the EV jamming up your pooper!
