I understand the game but I just can't figure out when to declare wars and how to win battles even with watching a bunch of tutorials and stuff.

If you bought El Dorado, then you could try making your own minor nation in Europe. This way you can decide your own path, and I find having my own nation gives me the motivation to go on, since I'm fighting for my own creation

I had my first "real game" (where I was not figuring out which thing does what) as Chavchuney (misspelled I know, Its one of those East Siberian tribes) and had whole eastern Siberia, Alaska, Mongolia and northern parts of China. I felt that this game was easy but then Russians came :(

My personal recommendation is Korea. You learn to get along with Ming or to forge alliances with the strongest pieces following a Ming-plosion and play that game. You have a lot of fighting to do with the Manchurian nomad nations to the north and you can do a bit of colonization. I think you get a bit of everything.

Britain is kind of challenging at the beginning - you have to learn dealing with disasters as well as fleet fights and external politics, especially with such enemy as France.

Aragon can be a good country to learn about trade, if you can mitigate Castile’s power early on. I was able to create a western Mediterranean trading in empire in one of my first games.

My favorite nation is Aragon. If you manage to balance France and Castille (military and diplomatically), you have a large set of opportunities opening to you :
- The Navarre succession (yummy).
- North African conquest (better allied with France and take Castille's coastal territory for that one) with the necessity to convert new territories or humanise yourself.
- Trade supremacy in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic.
- Italian wars through Naples.
- Colonization (tough but possible since you get shit tons of money from the trading nodes).
And all these mechanics to end up shitting in your pants with the rest of Europe in front of the kebab's rise...

I don't think Crimea should be here, the Ottomans either turn you into a march or annex you with a free CB.
And Burgundy gets the succession crisis, which just splits you between France and Austria

The best countries to start with is the small German cities like Hamburg or Lübeck because they are safe. or Sweden because Denmark will take well care of you if you are in their union and you will have time to learn to move your troops or build boats and many other things.

There is a nation, which has it all: Ayutthaya:
1) Colonial game + differences between old world colony and colonial nations
2) Conquest and religion conversions using vassals
3) Trade: many possibilities, from high mercantile collects from Phillipines, Malakka, Siam to strong trade stirring. Possibility to compare different approach in one empire
4) Ally switching, as mission to core whole Indochina requires some of it
5) Combat learning: taking advantage of defensive positions and attrition
6) Learning Mandate of Haeven mechanism

Statring as Ming's tributary guarantees noone would attack you except other tributaies.
This nations has sooo many possibilities and acces to so many eu4 mechanics at their basic level, that it is a shame you didnt grant it with a honourable mention.

Sweden is not a good choice as it would require the new player to buy some DLC, while I'm pretty sure that skilled player could gain independence on their own, that's not something we should expect from the beginner

I played as Vijayanagara pretty early on and I got a lot out of it. Especially Diplomacy from nations such as Dehli and Ceylon as well as colonization: I was able to colonize Australia before 1550. With a great starting military and religious bonuses being Hindu, I highly recommend playing as them.

Quantity Ideas with Russia are not necessary. Just the national idea and the amount of land you can easily grab gives you a TONE of manpower. It is better to pick something else and improve the quality and effectiveness of your troops.
