I bought this game used a long time ago. Its controls were horrible but the story was so good and begged deep analysis. I always thought it was about child abuse in the school system and the terrors of childhood

Oh, dont misunderstand me, the combat is pretty ass, is downright horrible at times, like beyond hiw bad we were at playing back then or whatever, but even then, you can overcome it. I managed to adapt to the weird off timing and angles you have to attack on and play the whole thing 3 times in a row to 100% complete it with all the hidden stuff and costumes with little difficulty.

The combat part, I'm sorry but I have to call BS on this. No matter how important the story plot is but if you are going to make it super repetitive or the character doesn't develop new skills to overcome this hurdles, it's horsey-dong-dong! If the game had a similar game mechanics like Walking Dead and reduce the combat to a minimum for some jump scares... I'll give it a go.

I was fortunate enough to have gotten a physical PS2 copy of this game way back before it’s price became massively inflated on the second hand market. I fell in love pretty quickly. Absolutely one of my favorite games (in spite of its jank), and one of the most artful narratives in the medium.

Will i completely agree with every word you say yore awesome 😍👍🏻
Expect for one thing
Yeah i got your point on the fight mechanics
But I think the team could improve it
I think silent hill series have the right balance with the fighting mechanic 👍🏻

Does this game give off some A24 horror vibes?

I got insanely lucky and found out a friend from work actually owned this game. She thankfully agreed to letting me borrow it for a while. It's an experience. I'm very grateful I got to play through it. I did several playthroughs and snagged all the collectibles. Amazing piece of media.

Your discussion of combat is charitable and it has its meaning, but I'm afraid that it's pretty clear that it wasn't a game design choice, but rather the product of rushed production and poor quality testing. To improve the hit boxes would suffice to make the combat reasonably challenging.

I always thought of the Battle mechanics as normal because of the character being inexperienced. And as you mentioned, the key was to escape or find a way to deal with bosses, not battling. Something similar happened when I played Shadow of the Colossus. In that game you could hit with your sword with slashes but that didn't work for anything. Really, you could only kill the giants by piercing them in specific spots with another completely different mechanic. To me, the hitting mechanic from the sword was there only to make you realize (by losing at battle) that going through life fighting monsters with a sword would only get you killed, and it was implemented because players instinctively try to hit enemies that way. It was your job to realize that was useless

horror games need to be scary, and good story. amnesia and outlast for example. they have no combat system, you can only run and hide

i first played it a couple of years ago and i did find the gameplay to be terribly bad. silent hill 1 feels better and it's older. it's not just the combat, it's the huge amount of backtracking around a boring airship with too many corridors that look the same. still i like the atmosphere and story, etc, so if i ever give it another try i'll do it with a walkthrough to avoid frustration

I'm enjoying Yoshiro Kimura's recent Indi Games. He also ported his 1998 MOON RMX RPG to PC and the switch a year ago. There was a recent poll, where Rule of Rose was mentioned, although I assume that the licence situation is messed up.

this is such a beautiful gem of a horror game and your video got me so hyped that i want to play it again. i think my favorite thing about the game is the fantasy theme you talked about and how almost all of that stems from the children's' imaginations. juxtaposed against the incredibly uncomfortable themes and the surreal backdrop, it's such an interesting way of making the mundane frightening and i connect with it in a HUGE way. thank you for the video, i loved watching it.

Great video! I do agree with the point about combat, I got really frustrated with the first boss fight, it made me stop playing for some time. I do agree it can be annoying because we used to a new types of combat in video games but it does make sense of the person Jennifer is, she is frail, a scaredy cat so in a normal sitaution the logical thing for a character like her is run away even though sometimes we are obliged to do it. It is a great game and way ahead of it's time maybe

I had this game (for chipped ps2 shh) sitting in my shelf for years, touched it once just to see if it worked and how it played. Until, during pandemic, I decided to play it and booooy what a ride. The atmosphere, the design, the music, the story, everything blended so perfectly together. The ending made me cry. And I loved it.

Excellent video.
The point about the combat is also pretty interesting, revisiting the game I've had a similar experience, it's really interesting how just knowing more about how these games work and maybe even their development history can change how some things are perceived in the experience, sure the game didn't magically become a combat masterpiece there's simply no way it could but it's certainly become more familiar and understandable for why and how that is
