To be honest a raptor should have better shielding, speed is critical however improved armour, also introduce remote raptors packed with explosives to land in in Cylon hanger-bays.

The target painting ability of the AR in Deadlock is actually more than just a gameplay gimmick. The biggest limitation in space combat regarding kinetic weapons would be time to target. These projectiles technically go forever at high velocities (until they hit something, get pulled into a gravity well, or just leave the area). So theoretically the range is unlimited. However, at long ranges good luck actually hitting a target that is moving evasively. The problem with gunnery would always be computational power for calculating firing solutions especially once you get to many thousands of km. Having a little ship there assisting these calculations would be a big help

The Raptor reminds me of a Huey Chopper from the Vietnam War.

SLIGHT change to the premise, sorry. Thought of this when Season 1 was on the air.

Not a chang to the BSG Raptor, but a spin off Viper.
One engine from the Mk3(?) Raptor, and the jump drive. (assuming the larger engines are needed to Power the Ftl.)
Mate that to a Viper Mk7, or whatever model is lying around, instant Space F16. (F16 is nicknamed Viper from the OG 70s Galactica, symmetry)
No nav comp, as big n heavy, so squadron would slave themselves to a Raptor and jump together. Nice little battle group.

for the algorithm

BSG and every other sci fi series (except Space Above and Beyond) was basically just, we have limited actor budget, so what if we take (character trained to do 1 thing) and then also make them space infantry, a thing that is a whole other collection of skills. So we just load our fighter pilots into the brick and do ground combat because reasons.

I love the terminology associated with this channel. "Eat the Sun" or "Mach Jesus" are golriously colorful hilarious phrases that are also immediately and naturally understandable to most people.

Add to a Raptor? 360 degree belly turret rather than fixed guns. It still lacks the mobility compared to fighters so a better firing arc should help survivability.

As it was mentioned in the video, for anyone that misses Battlestar Galactica Online, there is now a playable private server up and running for it
It's still missing some things (no story mode just yet) but so far all the ships and equipment seem to be present, NPCs are working and it plays pretty much just like the original with some absolutely massive battles going on between colonial and cylon players

The BIG thing I'd add to a Raptor would be an ECM jamming suit not just capable of scrambling an enemies DRADIS and sensors, but of highjacking all available enemy communications frequencies to blast Wanger's "Ride of the Valkries" (or alternatively CCR's "Fortunate Son").

There's definitely some inspiration from the UD-4 Cheyenne dropship used by the Colonial Marines in the Alien franchise.

Honestly the only thing I would add is a second FTL Drive. For a simple tactic. A "formalization" of the micro jump seen in the final episode during the Battle Of The Colony."
That tactic being launch in the Draids shadow of the Battlestar.

Jump to said location. AND!
Surprise, THE SUN (or other munition if appropriate), to the rear.
Jump Back. Recharge Jump Drives. Reload. Repeat.
