The CIA did indicate to me awhile back that they believe they're at a strength level to get rid of guns and weapons of murder from our Hemisphere. It could be the long-term arc of "Global Capitalism" is one where we no longer have guns and weapons to murder others available. The downside, for us is we reach a point where it's so crowded (like the 1970s Soylent Green) where we do have food, but can't stand to be alive anymore and let go so we can come back here again. Love, Don xoxo

hollywood is responsible for everything bad on Earth and in the cosmos. any bad thing idea has had a ton of films made with it in mind: violence, war, drugs, sex, paedophilia, apocalypse, disease, death and so on. But it also has a lot of good things that normally do not make any money so we don't care about them that much. Bad is good and good is bad.

My grandchildren have watched old “ Turner Classic” movies with me and I pointed out how when I was young the actual act of violence was imaginary ( or maybe in shadows) nor was blood 🩸 visible. They were fascinated, and enlightened! Thanks for this commentary, Bill!

I have long agreed with this regarding Hollywood contributing to the bad material they produce, and how it affects younger men, and our young people in general. In college guys hardly ever really wanted to go out on actual dates, because they were too busy playing Grand Theft Auto on their Play Stations. I could tell before a guy even told me he played Grand Theft Auto that he played that game and other games by the way he didn't have a clue how to talk to women or view them appropriately (meaning, we are not all a bunch of hookers or prostitutes). It was weird to say the least, and quickly learned that very few college guys are gentlemen. It never hurts to raise boys to act like men, and raise girls to act like ladies. It's like we go from super aggressive young people to overly sensitive young people that don't care to hold down a job, but they sure do like to whine all the time. Call me old-fashioned but children used to not behave like what we see today. I'm not saying Leave It To Beaver days were perfect, but back then normal behavior was considered to be the expected behavior in our society, not a rarity.

It's a straw man argument. Other countries like Canada have violent movies. Do you see the same level of violence there? No. But why? What could it be? It's not until you turn on the news in the US that you start understanding why.

I wonder if there is a way to email your writing staff. I wish Bill Maher would do a piece on following the money trail and rewarding the survivors of mass shootings. Does one realize how lucrative it is to be a survivor of one of these events? There is a restaurant in Uvaldi, Texas. The nation sent millions of dollars in donations to this restaurant to feed the people after the shooting. This is nice but it sends a subconscious message that it is profitable. The little girl who was the survivor of the shooting, she is simply a little girl. Day after the shooting, she is being interviewed on the national news networks. For those of you who don’t know, the national news can pay you up to twenty thousand dollars for an interview. She gets to have her hair sniffed by President Joe Biden. I’m a veteran and I never got my hair sniffed by a President. Before you read this next statement, consider my situation in life first. I am close to fifty, I live in Ohio and must work one full time and two part time jobs just to keep an apartment in a neighborhood where I won’t get shot walking out the door. Seriously, what message does this send? It lets me know that if a mass shooting happens in my area, and I survive, my life is going to be much, much better.

I agree that movies promote violence and may be linked to gun shootings but it still happens only in America at that scale. Access to guns is still the main culprit here. Make guns illegal. Simple.

Hollywood's hypocrisy - excellent point. But these other commenters are right when they say the problem goes far, far deeper than action, or revenge, films. In Maher's pie chart a big chunk missing is what contributes to all that mental illness. Some will say it's the breakdown of the family, with both parents working and so many of them wrapped up in their own toxic addictions that they're just not available for their kids, their families, so these kids grow up as toxic or more than the parents. Too simple an answer? Maybe. But when you look at those countries that are free of America's atrocious shootings, compare their families to those of the American killers and I'll wager you'll find an enormous clue to this problem. Of course, how to fix the family in a country driven by independent self-interest, that's maybe the toughest question of all.

Goddamn you're old. You're going to lecture us about how modern Hollywood is with clips from a 22 year old movie. Go back another 22 years and you'll see the same violence or much much worse. In all of the time we've had violence in media we've never seen anything resembling proof that it causes violence in people. We're not going to solve serious problems with ignorant approaches. Be a fucking adult. You're certainly old enough.

Remember when cartoons were said to be too violent for children? Tom and Jerry, Roadrunner and Wile E Coyote ……too violent! How quaint. These were cartoon characters blowing each other up, or falling off a cliff, only to reappear in the next frame. The only guns were wielded by characters like Elmer Fudd, often hoisted by his own petard. Bring back these “violent” shows. Despite their purported violence, my generation wasn’t spurred to kill our classmates because of them.
