How To Change Photo Format From HEIC To JPG On iPhone

In this quick tech video, I’m going to show you how to change the photo format on the camera on iPhone from HEIC back to JPG.

HEIC, HEIF, and HEVC are newer, more efficient file formats, but definitely not as universally compatible as JPG. You’re actually probably watching this video because you tried to send or upload a photo taken on your iPhone and realized it’s not working because it’s in the HEIC format. There are ways to convert the photo over to JPG, but here I’ll show you how to just change the default so that it’s always saving in JPG. Do note though that JPG’s do take up more space, so that’s something you’ll have to remember.

To change to JPG, open the Settings app.

In here, scroll down and tap Camera. At the top of here, choose Formats.

You will then see under Camera Capture, High Efficiency, and Most Compatible. And like I explained before, high efficiency is the newer formats, and most compatible is JPG. There are a couple of exceptions here with video, and it tells you that higher frame rate and HDR footage requires the high efficiency formats.

Change this setting to Most Compatible and you’re good to go. Now in the future when you take photos, it will save them in JPG format.

And that’s how you change the default photo format from HEIC to JPG on an iPhone.
