I dont have my bomb book handy, but if memory serves, less than 0.5 lbs of HE, detonated in a confined space, is lethal out to about 18 feet. Open air detonation, you're looking at 9 feet.

Where did you get the idea that the pressure inside the hull dissipates as you move further away from the impact site? It does not, the crewmen in the turret will experience the same level of pressure as the driver. The pressure wave travels throughout the entire tank compressing the air ahead of it. Which is why very often a penetrating or sometimes even a non penetrating shot can set off the ammo, even though the round does not come into direct contact with it.

So the most vulnerable crew member in all of the tanks are the driver, right? No wonder tankers always aim for the bottom plate or in between the turret (when firing HE) when facing a tank head on, either to kill them all, or immobilize the tank....
