The craziest thing about the pedestrian crossing sign where somebody died is that I lived near there when I was in the Philippines and it used to be a yellow sign that said "Don't cross here you could die" and THEN it changed to a red sign "Don't cross here someone already died"

From a visit years ago to the Philippines, I remember people even driving on the sidewalks, and that was in Manila. Definitely need reminder signs if not more (fines etc.)

I saw numerous sign like that in the Katipunan highway but still someone ends up dead illegally Crossing that highway. I'm amazed how hard-headed Filipinos are... 😅

I mean, sidewalks are usually non-existent in the Philippines for most of the places especially the semi-rural areas like where I am from. You cannot walk here without care. You'd most likely need to be watchful of the vehicles because you are basically on the road.

A Japanese friend of mine pointed out a sign over a sink in a washroom in a mall, "Bawal maghugas ng paa dito". She was learning Tagalog, so asked me "Do people actually try to wash their feet in the bathroom sink?" I myself have never seen anyone attempting this, but since the sign exists, I replied "Apparently, some people do". shrugs

Possibly the worst sign I've seen that would definitely confuse foreigners was dozens of banners hung all over Manila during one Catholic Youth Conference (forget what year, John Paul II was still pope), reading "Hating Kapatid". English speakers will think they know the first word, so will ask " what is Kapatid?" and get the reply "Brother or sister". What the phrase really means is "Sharing like brothers/sisters".

bawal umihi is a funny sign? if anything, it's embarrassing that we even need to have that sign. we are such pigs that a LOT of our people just pee anywhere. it's disgusting, undignified, and uncivilized. putang ina lang, nagkalat ang jollibee sa bawat kanto. libre cr dun.

I think the wang wang in NAIA (airport) is about a person cutting in line as if they're important. Wang wang is the siren used by VIPs to cut through traffic. Either siren from a police escort which corrupt VIPs use or they haven't their own siren.

For the "wang-wang" issue, politicians used to take advantage of police escorts to avoid traffic, that's why one of the former president prohibited the use of it for non emergency situations.

I think a slight incorrecr translation. "Wang-Wang" is the sounde that teh Siren makes. If I recall correctly, Siren in tgaalog is "Sirena" not "Wang-Wang". However, People do call it a "Wang-Wang" sometimes because its the noise sirens make.

The Tagalog for siren is "sirena." Sirena ng bumbero, sirena ng ambulansiya.

Wang-wang is an onomatopoeia and comes from the horns these vehicles make.
