Thanks Penny, I think this is the most informative video on how to actually start using a retinoid. The mention of a lag time stood out for me — my skin started flaking two days after the first time using retinal. I’ve also found it useful to let my skin dry for no less than 30 minutes before retinal at night, and before sunscreen (which can sting on the newly sensitized skin) in the morning.

Hello. Great video. My question is, if you are using a retinoid like tretinoin and want to also do medical microneedling every 4-6 weeks, I am reading that you have to stop the tretinoin 3-5 days prior to the microneedling and then not resume for 7 days following the microneedling. Is it a good idea to stop tretinoin for almost 2 weeks? It seems like a long time to interrupt a treatment like that. Is microneedling worth the interruption of this treatment? Referring to the same, since retinaldehyde is a milder choice, do you still need to wait prior and following microneedling to use that? I am new to all of this, and I am lost. I have started using a retinaldehyde at night (with the goal of moving to tretinoin in the future), and I also want to do some microneedling and I am trying to figure out how to combine the two. Thanks so much!

Hi Penny! I’m in my 30s and I have a tretinoin prescription for acne and age prevention. I’ve had some breakouts recently (maybe due to mask). Salicylic makes my oil production go wild, but benzoyl peroxide works very well on reducing swelling and the bumps. Because of this I’ve been thinking about working adapalene into my routine since it works well with adapalene. Are there any considerations or complications to switching vit-As? I hope my question is clear enough 🤣🤓

Does applying the serum and cream one hour after applying Tretinoin reduce its effects? I have mature skin. I use Tretinoin against aging:))

Penny,
I have tolerated retinols well in the past (but haven't used them for a few months now). I was thinking of bumping up to retinaldehyde (w/the Avene RetrinAL 0.05 Cream). Does the protocol --- waiting 20-30 minutes after cleansing & using pea size --- apply to retinaldehyde as well, or just to active retinoic acid? Thank you for such wonderful content!

I love your channel ❤️❤️ something I learned from Dr. Dray is you can apply your moisturizer onto damp skin immediately after cleansing and then once you skin is completely dry, apply your retinoid! I have very sensitive skin and this works like a charm. I’ll even apply a bit of moisturizer on top of the retinoid and it works really well :) subscribed and can’t wait to learn more ☺️

Penny, great advice! I greatly appreciate your expert knowledge for my skin! My favorite sunscreen for my face and neck that I’ve been using daily for several years now is epionce Ultra Shield Lotion SPF 50. It was created by a wonderful dermatologist, Dr. Thornfeldt. What is the best order in my skincare routine to apply my sunscreen? I want to make sure I’m doing this correctly. Thanks again!

On another video you were comparing the Sunday RIley A+ to The Ordinary Gran Active Retinoid and highlighted the superiority of The Ordinary. You stated that their Gran Active Retinoid was already in a form available for our skin to use and was "more gentle than Retinol and Retinaldehyde." So, would you recommend it for use on my neck instead of the Avene or Mychelle? If a Retinoid is comparable to Retin A, not needing a conversion step and you feel it is the more gentle than a Retinaldehyde , would The Ordinary Gran Active be a better choice for my neck?. I would love to hear your logic on this!

I started watching you and and love what I am learning!!

I am blessed to have "thick skin", very NON sensitive skin...I immediately started off with Retin-A 0.5%, pea size for face, pea size for neck, every night. I have pretty decent skin (blessed that way), so the effect on me is not too much. My skin care routine is more of maintenance for me.

Since I don't have any irritation with 0.5% every night (it has been almost 3 mths now), I was thinking to move to 1% after I am done with this. Do you recommend that?

Thanks so much and I love watching your videos! You are a naturale in front of the camera!

Do you know if the Vitamin C in Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate by the Ordinary will work even though it has a PH of 6.50 to 7.50. I like it because it's creamy and moisturizing, not harsh, but wonder if it will be effective.
