Living With a Covert Narcissist

I’m with a narcissist woman. Just yesterday she admitted she thought I purposely hide her important docs so it would be harder for her to move out. She found them and said it’s sad that I make her think I’d do that to her. God help me.

I'm so glad to see you address this. I was raised by a covert narc mom and older sister, who teamed up to destroy my self esteem from birth. Neither could make friends of their own so I guess decided they'd cripple me so I would be their loyal slave companion. I've been so lucky to escape. Of course my sister tried to destroy me as I was leaving. My mom has Alzheimers and is no longer capable of such behavior.

It's so easy to spot an overt narc. There needs to be a campaign to get info out about covert narcs because they destroy people even more.

They are professional victims. It's infuriating and so much crazy making. I was so brainwashed through his use of guilt trips and martyrdom.

Two days ago, he said he would cancel all the credit cards and slash my tires if I tried to leave. I had to sleep in the car with my son because I didn't feel safe. Yesterday he said the problem is my unforgiveness and his years of neglect and maltreatment is my fault. He got me a coffee that day so he's apparently so nice and I'm ungrateful. Oh and all this yelling at me and drama and calling me names -- my mom just suddenly died last week. I'm heading to her funeral by myself, driving 1500 miles grieving with a child, where I'm sure everyone will tell me how wonderful he is.

Does the covert narcissist lie to themselves first? Do they believe their own lies?

Oh, the list of grievances the covert narcissist remembers and brings up during arguments. After an argument, the silent treatment for days, weeks and for me, months. Thank you Dr. Clarke for putting this video together. I’m no longer married to the covert narcissist. I’m back with my family and friends, life is good. A Covert Narcissist to everyone else walks on water, high thought of and respected. At home, it’s misery, it’s everyone’s fault.

From my own personal observations, it seems the narcissism often hides some form of sexual addiction. The narcissism is utilized to protect his “precious.”

IF your man is finally at a place of complete brokenness and Jesus gets ahold of him, he renounces his addiction and seeks help for his trauma wounds, the narcissism significantly diminishes, and over time will completely disappear.

But without a true “come to Jesus” encounter rooted in genuine humbleness and repentance, you’ll be wishing you hadn’t wasted so many tears on him.

I love your description of these master manipulators. I was married to a criminal narcissist for 33 years and I had to fight for almost 5 years to get my divorce that he filed for. I just got it last week. A minister told me to divorce him before he got out of prison many years ago and now I know why. The guy is very evil and should be in prison.

Dr Clarke, this is my story. You just described my ex and yet you don't know him. You're so right about the fact that I'm the only one who knows who he truly is, and how he treated me in our marriage. Everyone thinks he's this wonderful, kind guy, and that I'm crazy to have left him. I've stopped explaining cos I know what he did and who he really is and, most importantly, I now have peace. Oh,I just searched covert narcissist...I'm watching this with my chin on the ground.The depth of his destruction is endless.The cruelty escalated to the police report describing our situation regarding domestic violenc/abuse like this"If there's one more incident involving domestic violence/abuse IT WILL LIKELY END IN HOMICIDE" ITs even more ironic is my gut feeling was screaminr..RUN!!!

I'm very confused because my feelings are hurt when I'm criticized by meanspirited people and lots of times I stand up to them! Then they act like I'm the mean one when I defend myself. I guess that makes me a covert narc? Then I think I need space from them to cool off because they crossed boundaries.

This man needs a platform in every church. He is one of the few that speak the truth about destructive relationships. Most of the church is completely blind and ignorant.

I like things done a certain way, my way,,,When you ask me to do something, it make me not want to do it,,,I don't compromise,,,I like to remember things the way I remember them, not necessarily how they happened,,, I like to push the boundaries - these are some of the things I hear. I don't know what to do. I've only been married a year & my husband checks these boxes, but other than my family nobody would ever believe me; I even doubt myself and don't believe it at times. I'm worried I'm misunderstanding him and it is just me. I'm going to counseling, but I don't know how to express what my husband does and when I mention things here and there, he (my counselor) just says that it is a guy thing. So I just focus on improving myself as a person, my anxiety, my confidence, and trying to mature. I didn't start dating until 24 almost 25 and my husband was my first everything. We have been together for 4 years now. He can be so sweet and seems to care, yet other times I feel like I'm last place in his life. I'm so angry with myself! I should have known better.

I don't know why, but lately, I can recognize covert narcs pretty quickly. They are unpleasant people to be around. I have lived around three of them within my small apartment building. The manager may be a covert narc herself, and may be moving her friends and family in, or something. 🤷🏼

It’s literally physical, psychological, emotional torture at levels incomprehensible to the average person.
They never have a good day.. they are a martyr and they will sacrifice YOU, your family, and your kids for his Own personal glory.
They ALWAYS bash you behind your back, lots of silent treatments, and you will always have to apologize.
Their punishments can go on for weeks! Even Months!

That jerk covert narc-ex pretends a human rights activist but he wants to abort his unborn child. Such hypocrites jerk! I'm glad that I got away from this devil.
