On July 10, 1994, Airbus launched the most technologically advanced commercial aircraft in the world. The A340 is a large, four-engine jet capable of transporting up to 380 passengers- all while flying at speeds up to Mach 0.64. The A340's most noteworthy feature is its four large, interchangeable wings. While cruising at cruising altitude, each wing can move independently from the other and perform different maneuvers to achieve desired flight characteristics. During its test flight, the A340's crew performed several unusual landing maneuvers to test the aircraft's capabilities and reduce its carbon footprint on the environment. When things go wrong on a test flight, the results can be deadly for both the plane and its crew. To my knowledge, no one has ever chronicled an A340's landing attempt on an aircraft carrier. As far as I know, no one has ever blogged about it either. To illustrate how strange that seems, consider that Stephen Colbert once documented his own failed attempt to land on an aircraft carrier- and now he's a famous comedian. Here then is a body-length overview of what happened when an Airbus A340 attempted to land on the Charles de Gaulle during an exercise.

The A340's landing attempt on the aircraft carrier was lengthy and difficult. After taking off from Toulon- Jean Les Airport in France, the airliner headed towards Corsica Island where it would land on the carrier. Along the way, its crew executed several unusual maneuvers to test their plane's ability to land on a pitching deck at sea with very little engine power. These included inverted barrel rolls, forward rolls and back flips. Apparently satisfied that their plane could handle these conditions, the crew landed their aircraft on the carrier without troubles. However, things did not go so smoothly when they attempted to stop their plane on the deck. According to witnesses quoted by Airlineratings.com, 'the nose of the aircraft barely stopped before it veered off in a different direction.' Fortunately, this resulted in very superficial damage to both the plane and crew members' feet rather than catastrophic structural failure of the aircraft itself or death for its occupants.

Both passengers and crew members reacted to this unusual event with amusement at first until they became overheated and dehydrated. According to Airlineratings.com, 'amidst great confusion from all passengers, some getting off by running onto the wings of the aircraft and others falling off,' water was distributed among both passengers and crew members via hatches in cabin ceilings as part of emergency procedures for an unplanned pressurization.' As everyone hydrated themselves with this water, amusement turned to relief that everyone had survived this ordeal unscathed. After both pilots inspected their planes for structural damage and possible fuel leaks, both crews decided that both planes were ready for take off again despite their earlier landing mishap. During another test flight later that day however, one of these planes crashed into a French bay when its pilot intentionally ran it into a naval ship while demonstrating engine trouble Another problem with testing planes like these is that they can sometimes become environmental hazards after their flights end because their crews have no way of dismantling them anymore than they can dismantle intercontinental ballistic missile launchers once they return home from war duty. To be honest though- I think we should all be grateful that these planes are being tested at sea where neither passengers nor crew members are at risk of death or serious injury every time one takes off or lands unexpectedly!
