The problem with going to a flip phone from a smartphone is the lack of functionality. The smartphone isn’t the problem, the problem is truly a lack of self control.

$380 for a dumbed down phone? Why so expensive- you can get basic Samsung Galaxy phones for under $100 new.

I think the "dumb phone" movement is just silly. I just don't get intentionally limiting what your phone can do, even battery life isn't an argument since a smart phone set up to be "dumb" will run for days on a charge. If you find you're smart phone is distracting or intruding and it is a problem, there is lots of ways to configure apps and the phone to stop that. It is not the phone that is the problem, it is that you're using it wrong.

Are we supposed to believe that Apple doesn't use China for cheap labor?? LOL...sure Tim. Cheap labor = more $ in Apple's pockets and we all know Apple LOVES over charging people for thier Chinese products.

The idea of using a dumb phone it can be a a solution for some, but what if you need for an emergency situation an advanced function? Instead, we could try to learn how to use the smartphone, in a smart way, disabling all the notifications first, and already this, can have a real impact on the usage, I believe. The function that tells you how many hours you used it, it's vital, in order to moderate the usage.
For me the only concern about smartphones is security, as it is for any smart device. Security is not the core business of all tech companies, the only one, in my opinion, that gives a bit more importance to that, is Apple. Android and Windows systems respectively for mobile e desktop, are the worst in terms of security. A dumb phone should help with that, a bit, I hope.

Purism an American company selling cellphones nobody heard of at $2000 a piece? And they say they are profitable. There is a small bunch of "Patriotic Americans" who would buy Made in US at any price. But when that bunch is saturated, what are you going to do??

What I find fascinating is how a country once so dominate in technology manufacturing wholesale exported that capability to Asia effectively dumbing itself down. Remember all the clean rooms in silicon Valley? HP used to make its computers here. Asia could not have developed the capability without techs search for skilled low cost labor.

The reporter completely misinterpreted Tim Cook's statement. He said that China stopped being the cheapest country to produce (compared to India, Vietnam, Indonesia and African nations), but the reason they stay is because of expertise which is lacking in the aforementioned countries.

I use note samsung phone and set it to ultra power saving mode. That way it can function both smart and dumb phone. I just want more battery life to be honest. Smart phone can be set to dumb by not installing anything but it drains battery too fast that's why it's losing to dumb phone. For browsing net i use my pc and tablet. Smartphone can actually stop dumb phone market creep by making a new setting inside to make it dumb. $400 for dumb phone is way too expensive anyway

If people in America will sit in front of a package machine at Amazon having to pee in bottles. I promise we would be more than happy assembling phones at above minimum wage. It's not about the type of work it's about the lack of respect for the worker.

The minorities in America were very well off the middle class was good. Racism Made the us give manufacturing to other countries that still had to learn.
If they teach the people like they do for the people oversea it works in America
But that would mess up there plans for larger prisons and the end of families
Blacks and Latino are willing to learn but racism is deep in America.
Americans wants the jobs it’s just hate .
They knw majority of the people would be minorities.
They really don’t want want America to be great again it’s deliberate and selfish they rather give it to Chinese there enemies. Think about that ….

My response to Mr Tim Cook: Well, obviously, China has significantly more skilled laborers than the US, because US companies like Apple CHOSE to set up manufacturing in China and invest in the infrastructure and training it took to build that talent. US companies literally created that ex-US skilled labor pool. There were not thousands of Chinese technicians ready to build phones just waiting for the US to decide to build there.

These decisions are ALL about money and what can be made at the expense of the worker. To say differently is disingenuous at best. The reason these companies are even considering a move to India is because there is an even cheaper workforce willing to be trained (because you better believe Apple would be training those people from scratch to make their phones, investing in another ex-US workforce). India is willing to be paid less than Chinese workers, and the US has a better, less risky political relationship with them compared to China. After we exploit India, then we'll move to South America, and after that we'll hope that Africa has enough stability to finally take advantage of their labor pool.

Eventually, capitalists will run out of labor workforces that can be exploited. Maybe we'll have robots doing everything by then? Or perhaps companies won't have insane, year-over-year earnings. They'll look back fondly at the good old days in the early 2000s when capitalism ran amuck.

There's plenty of skillful people in the USA who are not being given opportunity. I see too much favoritism in the USA though, where it doesn't matter so much if you're a hard worker, but who you know. It's tiresome and the reason so many are moving to self-employment.
