The medical elements of the show may not be accurate but they mostly reflect what the predominant scientific thinking was at the time, so the series is actually mostly accurate, since the characters would likely have said and thought these things

The inaccuracy in how people thought of radiation was i think justified because people that time never knew about radiation illness or seen disaster like this...
So they speculate But wounds are actually hyped up.

Most of the show/series was portraying the effects of external exposure. What about the repeated low dose internal exposure through ingestion of cesium contaminated food after the fact in contaminated areas where people were told they could go back to. In the following years after the incident, this had been found to be far more injurious than previously believed and especially to young people? I guess I felt that HBO's failure to represent this in the movie was a huge omission.

IIRC, potassium iodide likely being ineffective if given that late was actually addressed in the series.
Well, basically, other than a few symptoms they exaggerated for more drama impact, most of the things she pointed at were actually consistent with people being misinformed back then.
Also, it's chilling that some things were actually arguably WORSE than portrayed, like the damage caused by incorrect dosages and firsthand stories of the coverups.

In the Soviet Union, the government did not permit a nuclear disaster.
Therefore there was no need to train medical personnel to treat radiation exposure and sickness.
Thus the series was correct in having medical personnel guess on how to deal with radiation exposure.
The government dealt with a nuclear power plant meltdown by simply not allowing it.

Except the firefighters had way more radiation than the Soviet government would admit, thus they were radioactive. If you look up how much is universally fatal they had double that dose

the number how many people died.... we will never know. and we will never know how many people had a shorter life. people who were exposed to the radiation and lived long, could live longer .

Weird to me that this show is acted exclusively by actors who’s first language is english. We not talking about how unrealistic that in itself is, because, you know… that’s weird.

To be honest, as a civilian/ local resident in an emergency nuclear evacuation…I would not want to have know about the actual REALITY of the situation! No need, just evaluate. Absolutely HORRIFIC! 😢

This is an important video. Getting basic scientific facts wrong, even in a fictionalized account, can have serious repercussions. I'm really disappointed that the team at HBO would spend so much time getting the cinematography and acting so perfect, but fail to have an expert check their medical facts.

People with acute radiation sickness CAN INDEED be a danger to others if they happen to still be contaminated with radioactive materials, which COULD be the case in a nation where proper procedure and the truth is criminalized. The special effects and some of the facts in this production were indeed inaccurate in ways, but decontamination will not always be taken seriously.

This show is somewhat mixed impression… brilliant backdrop and camerawork, engaging and intelligent. But also you have a very inappropriate take on that kingdom of lies late ussr was all about, straightforward cringe scenes like the one with coal miners and the minister and some myths about radiation.

Ответить

It could be argued that the characters in the series not telling medical facts is not necessarily the series being inaccurate. While not medically accurate, it could be historically accurate since people at the time either didn't know any better or told lies on purpose.
