I've bought an AM4 based server motherboard along with a 5950x so if I ever do want hardware decoding I was always going to have to go with a dedicated GPU. Definitely something to be mindful of though.

There is also one another option, using intel vpro features with intel Q series chipsets.

how do you know if the motherboard is compatible? I looked at a supermicro motherboard and it does have IPMI but doesnt say anything about being available in BIOS to disable or enable in the manual.

The only problem is it's impossible rn to find any Pis at reasonable prices, even Zero 2W costs $100-200 - insane!

@Wolfgang's Channel - Have you got a neat solution for connecting to your jellyfin server without a (static) IPv4 and only a dynamous IPv6 address? With neat i am thinking about using a Fire TV Stick Jellyfin App without modifying the Fire TV Stick. Just make it accessible for everyone who wants it (and got the connect data and a account to log in to it).

another solution is to possibly provide the additional Episode content using a merge episode plugin and having the 720 - 1080 - 4k files select-able minimizing trans-coding required. its a lot of extra files but if you want to minimize the trans-coding that could be an option. absolutely love the content here as I have an old 8700k cpu and motherboard that i could put to use till i get a proper low power setup.

After trying jellyfin, Plex and what not...finally just settled for Kodi nerds to play off my 5TB USB drive I hooked up to routers USB. Plays 60 gig Blu days just fine over the 5ghz!

Video encoding/decoding should be left to another box that specializes in that purpose. I use a gaming rig which tears through video codecs as my Plex server and expose the media libraries to it. The NAS is for storage and should specialize in storage.

I have an Asrock - e3c246d4u motherboard with IPMI, to enable hardware acceleration I have to use a secret BIOS menu (ctrl+alt+F3 while booting) and enable multi-monitor to have the Quicksync working in Jellyfin. FYI

Decoding should be done on client side, download footage in h.264, disable server side conversion.

Haven't tried this on my server yet, but I had issues with the IPMI on my X570D4U that seems to come from the same problem. When the iGPU is activated, the KVM does not output video. Luckily I can do without hardware encoding

10 W vs 4 W is not gonna break the bank - you can always unplug the server when not in use.

for me the most hated function of plex is transcoding. there should be an option to force direct play or not do not play the content at all. when watching something halfway trough i realize its transcoding and have to cancel watching and search for a version supported without transcoding.

I would LOVE to see a video on how to use a Raspberry PI as a remote KVM for a home server! I've got a Chinese X99 board that 100% fit my needs, but no iLO/iDRAC style remote management interface. BUT! I do have two Raspberry PI's laying around.

Someone mentioned this issue on HN the other week, does your board have a jumper anywhere to disable the IPMI graphics chip? Apparently its not always a BIOS option. Edit: Just pulled the manual for your board up, check jumper VGA_SW1 behind the VGA port.

Brah just use the cockpit panel and shell. Install casa OS on top if you're really not into using the shell.

too bad the server wont fit a good video card in it, and there are no extra power connectors for the video card. Only a cheesy half assed video card will work. Plex and Jellyfin are best run from a powerful desktop pc.

I actually disabled hardware transcoding as I never have more than two 1080p streams at once and it's mostly a straight stream.
This makes it much easier to migrate my Plex VM around as it no longer relies on hardware passthrough. :)

My plex server lives on a QNAP device with a weak Celeron. So transcoding sucks anyway. I used a docker instance of tdarr and converted all my media to a format that can direct play to all my clients.
