I was in Monterrey and a 6 yr old girl got shot and killed by a stray bullet by gang violence in the neighborhood next to my Airbnb. Wrong place wrong time is what will get you. I’ll be going to Mexico City and visit Tepito in a few weeks and check it out, as well as the surrounding areas away from the tourist sector. The real Mexico is not in those areas I find.

90% of crimes go unreported in Mexico. The police are involved in almost all serious crime....how do you trust your figures ? You can't.....you have no reliable numbers. But I can count the number of people risking everything to apply for asylum in the US citing danger to their lives in Mexico. Hundreds of thousands of them. Are they lying or are greedy tourists and tourist businesses kidding themselves and or lying to us?

"he was mugged and left for dead" did they mean something that happens and will happen again, hundreds of times every year in USA? USA, the most dangerous "developed" (let's be honest, USA is just a third world country in disguise) in the world? . USA shocked about 2 death in a cross fire between narcos... how ironic for a country with more than one mass shooting reported every single day... If "you" advise not to travel or live in Mexico, then you should definitely ask your own citizen to never ever live their homes in USA and to never travel inside USA either and to never travel to countries abroad (in asia, europe etc.). Because ask 1000 people who actually lived or traveled to Mexico and are USA citizens, and you'll probably get 995 of them telling you how much more safe they felt in Mexico compared to USA. Don't enter road rages, don't buy drugs or consume drugs, don't get drunk, don't go out late at night or when it's dark outside, don't go to shaddy places, don't follow strangers , do'nt accept drinks from strangers in bars and you'll be fine..; and that advise applies anywhere in the world. Pity criminal happens anywhere in the world, accident too, crossfires too, wrong time wrong place too.
p.s: I lived a bit in Mexico (guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta) and I felt more safe there than during my few days in USA.

As for bribes, I’ve talked/argued my way down from $550 (US) to $10 after they wanted me to go to an ATM to take money out (I said I didn’t have a card) then asked how much I had. I said $20 so the officer said to give him that. I said no, that I needed to get gas with it. He asked how much I could give him so I said $10. He said ok but if anyone asks I gave him $550. That was my last bribe I paid to them. I then learned Spanish and argued with everyone looking for a bribe until they would just tell me to leave (without paying anything).

It can be fairly safe if you stay in the tourist areas. However, 6 of the 10 most dangerous cities in the world are in Mexico. The police, military and judicial system are corrupt. Get the proper car insurances, have money for a great lawyer and don't be a fool. You should be fine.

It’s so safe that the COPS extort you lol.

Reasons to travel to Mexico:
You can get drunk
You can get extorted by police regularly
You can get shot by a drug lord at a resort for looking slightly too far to your left.
You can even get sold into slavery. 😎

@Rozzjd
@Rozzjd - 29.05.2023 02:08

Nope.

I respect your opinion but I disagree. Your experience is based on 6 months? Mine is 43 years.

If you travel by airplane, go to shopping malls, fancy places, restaurants, go to downtown, don't get drunk in public, don't go walking at night and a few more things you are safe. OK.

But many states such as Sonora, Colima, Zacatecas, Juarez, Estado de México, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Guerrero (to name a few) are very dangerous. You have to avoid driving to get there because a car/truck will chase you or try to stop you with weapons, blocking road with stones or nails, people throw heavy rocks from bridges, etc.

Bad things happen everywhere, right but when was the last time you saw a human head or a body hanging from a bridge? When was the last time you were on a plane or watching a game at the stadium and you had to cover your head and run because of shootings? Ask people of flight AM165 from Aeromexico (January 2023 in Sonora) if Mexico is a safe country? There are lots of videos. Even the Guardia Nacional (national guard) are killed and outnumbered so they run away or avoid facing criminals.

Feminicides is serious, in Mexico is a hunt for women. Singer "Manu Chao" have talked about this serious problem since MANY years ago. 94 mayorss from small cities/places have been killed by cartels in the last 5 years. Don't believe me? Look it up! The whole band called "Kombo Kolombia" was murdered (17 people) by cartels many years ago and it doesn't stop here unfortunately.

Many things ONLY happen in Mexico and it's a f shame. Everyday is worst (look for "El Pozolero" from Tenango del Valle). He ate his victims heads.

There was a shooting on 5th Avenue (the tourist street) in Playa del Carmen when I was there, a German woman told me how it happened right across from the coffee shop she was in and everyone took cover. This was about 4 months ago. Also if you are a single man you get harassed every 5 seconds to buy drugs.

This is spot on! We arrived back from Playa, Cancun and Holbox (visited following your trip to Holbox - amazing!) - we actually arrived the day after 4 “tourists” were killed in Cancun. There was heavy police/marines presence but I didn’t mind that, I was reassured by seeing them to be honest. After a day or two and got my bearings, walking to the supermarket, I started to feel more confident. As long as you’re not walking about flashing an expensive watch/bag, (and as you said, acting like an idiot), you’ll be fine - have common sense and remember to stay respectful to the locals. I’m definitely going back.
