Just to hone your knowledge a little sharper, the reason Mercedes seemed slow to badge their Ilmor F1 engine as a Mercedes unit was pretty clever.
Until the engine was developed enough to be both reliable and competitive it was an Ilmor, if it was slow or blew-up no biggie the onus was on the Ilmor brand not on Mercedes who were able to keep their ownership of the engine after arms length until it was a winner.

Gotta agree with so many comments here. According to the FOC, 'Andretti and General Motors bring no added value to F1' and yet perennial back fielders like Sauber do??? [No offense to Sauber, I am actually a fan]. The same can be said about HAAS, and I'm a huge fan of HAAS [yeah, I'm a Yank if you hadn't guessed yet]. This BS with Audi is yet another example of how the FOC is absolutely and categorically full of s**t and left to themselves will drag F1 down instead of lift them up. Sad sad days.

back markers should be forced to race into the top 14 Sunday race by running on Saturday. Bottom qualifiers should have to win a Saturday race or finish top 4 to get into Sundays race.

One of these days F1 and the teams will learn that aside from Ferrari, who threaten to leave all the time, manufacturers don't give a damn about their quaint race series and are fickle. Hitching your wagon to them is a waste of time and money.

Andretti has already set up a Silverstone office, so it's likely that after a couple of years, they will move everything into the Silverstone and Indianapolis offices and sell off the Swiss office.

The VW group "post dieselgate" went all electric, waaaaaay too early. And the market reacted badly, and Audi aren't selling enough cars. They seriously don't have the financial resources to do F1

Why does this not surprise me? No German manufacturer commits to any racing series for any length of time. Pretty sure the current Mercedes F1 team is the longest a German company has ever committed to something, and that's only 15 this year. Who knows how long they'll tolerate not winning before they quit.

I'll be honest. I want to see Audi in F1. However, if Audi decides to get cold feet and bail on this before it even is supposed to start, I'll be laughing my ass off at how stupid they just made F1 look after making a huge song and dance about luring Audi into their sport only for them to bail before it even gets started. And I'm sure Michael Andretti would be laughing as well at the misfortune of the people who thought that his team "wouldn't bring value to the sport".

well...as a german it wouldn't surprise me if Audi (daughter of VW...yeah just another one) pulledout...somehow trying to safe their "face"...but the way things are going economically and politically here in germany at this time it looks to be "out"...too much money.....for perhaps little "gain"....BMW failed and pulled out....and WEC didn't want merc and Audi in either...too many german manufacturers are motorsports death...always has been.....

Big car manufacturers have come and gone in the sport since it’s inception. Andretti is a racing team and will be a more committed entrant over the long term.

Andretti buys Sauber, relocates to the USA. The rest of the teams say wtf as they realise theres nothing they can do, considering that Sauber is already a customer team, so extending the engine supply is no arduous task, and as the grid slots remain the same, there is no dilution of the prize pot. Audi chang their mind again, and decide to join. F1 tells them to do one.
