In this tutorial, I begin to discuss the UV unwrapping process in Maya. Specifically, I discuss how to apply the checkermap texture in Maya to an object in order to see how the 2D texture will be mapped to the 3D object. This method is great for checking to make sure that the texture will not appear stretched and also to get a feel for where the seam is in your model's geometry (later on after unwrapping as well). By the end of this tutorial video, you will begin to understand how 2D UV texture map to 3D mesh objects and how to use the checkermap texture to check for distortion when applying textures to your model.
