But I still have a few questions, hoping I can get some answers here.
1. What if I accidentally inserted my JR Pass at the starting station (covered by JR pass), and want to alight at another station that is not covered by JR Pass?
2. How do I reserve the tickets with oversized baggage compartment? And how much does it cost for the compartment?

you dont insert the seat reservation ticket to the gate slot for entry - just the JR pass ..

How to exit ticket gates when you have reserved seat ticket, do you still insert both ticket and pass? If so, the pass will come back right 😂?

Are there passes to save on taxis, buses, Uber foreigners in Tokyo? It is my understanding that foreigners pay less for this “JR pass” than the citizens of Japan

You literally posted this video when the price increased by 70%. There's really no point in getting the pass now unless you are planning on a 12 hour ride on the bullet train from Kyushuu all the way up to Hakkaido. I am thinking about doing this because i want to enjoy the ride and the scenery on the way. Also to enjoy ekibens from different stations. 14 day pass used to cost 47,000yen. It's now 50,000yen for a SEVEN day pass. A 7 day pass costs more than what a 14 day pass used to cost. Save your money you dont need a JR pass. Unless you are crazy like me.

I’m still unsure how to book multiple seats at the green ticket machine. Do my partner and I use the machine separately, then try and book seats next to each other? Or can we book two seats using the one JR Pass?

I recently bought a JR pass however, i was looking to upgrade the individual tickets to green car. Since i can't upgrade my pass, i read that its possible to use the green car with an ordinary JR pass however, i just have to pay the difference. I wanted to ask, in your opinion, do you think it'd be necessary to reserve a seat on the shinkansen from Umeda to Hiroshima (I'm planning to go to Miyajima)? I was going to just leave it to chance in the unreserved carriages but this is for a Saturday morning before 7am and I wasn't sure how busy it'd get at this time on a weekend.

I had similar concerns for reserving a seat from Hiroshima to Tokyo for the next day (Sunday) around noon. I think I'll have to transfer at Osaka so would that mean I need two separate reservations as well?

Also, If you book the JR Pass directly from JR website you can reserve seats online and just pick up the tickets at the machine/counter. I've used It for JR whole Japan Pass, does anyone know If It works the same for the other regional passes?

I hate this new system. The old passes were laminated and hard to lose. I'm so worried about losing the pass as it looks identical to regular tickets and you have to take the pass out each time. Ugh. Thanks for the tips and demos

Great vid. I think the hardest part of the JR passes was trying to remember where/when to use them for local (non-Shinkansen) trains to maximize the value. By the 2nd week visiting Japan, I was switching between Suica and JR, but it took awhile.

This is probably the best video on it, been to Japan a few times myself and it's pretty straight forward. I'd recommend just setting up your JR pass when you land in the country at the airport. We typically don't activate it till the bulk of the trip but like Will said the staff at the airports know English a little better.

I'm going to have a 9-hour layover in Tokyo from Haneda Airport. So I would like to take the chance to visit the Tokyo Skytree and Tokyo Tower. So my question are:

1. Do I need a JR pass to go on monorail to these two towers? What is a better transportation from Haneda Airport to Skytree?

2. Could you please please please indicate how to get to Tokyo Skytree from Haneda Airport? As what I've been searching, firstly, I need to get on the monorail from Haneda Airport. But after that I don't really know where I should get off and how to get to the Skytree.

3. About the carry-on luggage. I heard about lockers/ coin lockers but where is the most convenient way to get it? Because after 6 hours I will return the Haneda Airport to catch another International flight.

Unfortunately there are a couple of points of misinformation in this video. 1. JR Pass ordered from third party does not come via email, you get an actual paper exchange order sent to you via post/courier, and 2. Only JR Pass needs to be inserted into ticket gate. No need to insert seat reservations.

Will it be a problem if I cannot present the credit card used to purchase the JR Pass?

A point of confusion I had while I was just in Japan this last month was whether or not I needed to have a paper ticket for my reservation or if the online reservation was sufficient.

I had booked a bunch of tickets before I got to Japan and while there my first week I didn’t bother to have any tickets printed. I’d just enter the station with the jr pass and sit in my designated seat. Not once was I asked to present the paper ticket.

Then two weeks later my partner showed up and she got her jr pass and at the jr office they issued her paper tickets for all of her reservations.

Now the reason I ask is because during our trip we needed to book a different train two hours later than our original reservation. For me I opened the Japan rail site and clicked change reservation and got another seat.

But for her since she had her tickets issued it gave an error “overlapping booking”.

So I get the sense that they want you to get a paper ticket issued but it makes it way harder to adjust scheduling on a whim (oh wow it’s really nice here and we want to stay an extra 2 hours…).

Is there a downside to reserving online but not having a ticket issued?
