CRISPR is a new area of biomedical science that enables gene editing and could be the key to eventually curing diseases like autism or cancer. WIRED has challenged biologist Neville Sanjana to explain this concept to 5 different people; a 7 year-old, a 14 year-old, a college student, a grad student and a CRISPR expert.

Find out more about Neville's work at:

The problem is not only the structure, sequence and mechanism of gene expression but also the time during the developmental stages gene correction/desired changes should be made. This requires the comprehensive knowledge of cellular molecular functions at different stages of life time. Not impossible but not an easy task either.

I'm quite impressed with the high school student's knowledge on the subject

I really hate the way he talks about autism in the beginning of the video. It is not a disease, just a neurotype and disability.

I don’t think we will see Jurassic park per say but I would not be surprised if we see the creation of a wooly mammoth 🦣 hybrid in our lifetime. I know there are people working on it and talking over the ethics and how it would be done (be it an artificial womb or an African/asian elephant).

Saying people go out and get plastic surgery so how is crisper any different. Well I’d say- using crisper to manipulate look of someone is a parents choice, not the choice of the person being manipulated. Where as plastic surgery is the choice of the person getting the procedure. A child of a foetus that has had a marker to remove say haemophilia isn’t going to be annoyed that they don’t have that condition but they may be annoyed at having had their DNA manipulated to look a certain way against their will. So we definitely need regulations in place on what can & cannot be done if this becomes available to the general public.

I think even if we did know how to alter eye colour, hair colour, height I don’t think that would be ethical. But I think crisper would be good to remove genetic diseases such a as the genders that pass on haemophilia, brittle bone disease, muscular dystrophy, cystic fibrosis, dwarfism etc. as these things drastically effect peoples quality of life. So if we can prevent these conditions then we give the people a longer, healthier, more productive life.

I’m around the level 3 college student level. Although I understand bits of the higher up things.

Ethics = An extremely tiny number of humans deciding what they perceive as best for all of humanity without consent
of humanity.
Example = Leaders in the field of AI have been warning about the rate in which learning is taking place
swiftly surpassing mans ability to perceive it.
However no company can afford to be left behind in the development of the powerful tool.
Ethical Decision Towards AI = A Corporate entity, making a financial decision to stay afloat, with hopes that humanity
will prosper, and stay afloat as well, despite valid concerns among those in the field.

I remain optimistic about the future of AI based off of the choices i've been given, as a holder of 1 in 8 billion witnessing
the swift change coming in sheer knowledge to humanity, at a rate that we somewhat understand, to a destination not yet comprehensible.

Just as has always been the growth for mankind, with the addition of accelerated speed, aided by a god, birthed in the ethical code of man, to assimilate all his prior knowledge at great speeds, directing the accumulations into knowledge yet unknown.
We partake and observe.
With hope; we expect a Prometheus, with silent caution, curious that Oedipus may appear (analogy based on past memory)
Mankind will always get what he deserves.
Questioning any assuredness that he may have, that what he deserves, is anything resembling what it is that he wishes for.

I love the concept of these videos, but we really love to see more diversity in the interviewer/ host. For instance, other people of color besides Asian and white. Also, diversity in gender as well...

You can't stop allergys... if you could you would have done already... level 1. you can't stop cancers level 2... muscular dystrophy... incurable. Level 3 failed... level 4 sounds like eugenics... level 4 failed. Level 5...🥶
Let's bring back T-rex? Dose that sound like a good idea? Or should we carry on making mammoth meat balls, hmmm tasty mammoth meatball.🤤... this tells me that these autistic incels should get with the program and do something that will benefit humanity. On level 6 BTW is talking about GAIN OF FUNCTION research. This is how covid happened. If you dont question science they will end up killing you..
This is why we have nuclear weapons today. This is why they still have smallpox in a lab somewhere. The reason you should not trust science is because it is amoral. And scientists have done deplorable things during the centuries. Act accordingly.
